my transfer case is leaking at the speedometer. I went to GM for a new seal. I put it in just like the old on it still leaked. Where on that shaft does the seal go? All the way back? I asked the GM guys but they didn't have any books on trucks that old. Am I missing a piece? All I have is a shaft with a gear on it, a seal and the nut piece that screws into the transfer case.

Does that mean that I have to buy a new sleeve, or can I just get a new gasket?

Not sure if you can get just the gasket.I believe it's more than just a O-ring.

I'm going to go to GM tomorrow and see what they can do for me. The part number to the sleeve should help. Thanks

$14.00 from gm parts direct.
Just plug in the part # in the search section.

I went to GM today and no one in my area has one in stock and its a special order. Does anyone know for certain that when you order the sleeve it comes with a seal? I just want to find out for sure before I order an item I can not return.

It's all one piece.
You get the steel sleeve with the seal allready installed.
That's how it came when I ordered mine anyway.

Thanks everyone for your help, I got that piece in the mail today and it is exactly what I needed.

Sometimes even my "simple tech writeup" seems to be the most appreciated!!

It took me a long time to find that part, so I'm always glad when someone else can solve the same problem SO much more easily!! :thumb:

If you need "tech" on how to remove the ignition tumbler and trim ring.....let me know, I've got that one perfected also. :haha:

I used Greg72's write-up as well. I had to order the part. At first I thought that this sleeve didn't fix the problem because it still leaked for two days after installing it. I found out that there was a lot of oil in the speedometer cable and the tiny gearbox and it was draining out. So you might want to clean those out and grease them properly
