FYI that red blinking power button thing is covered under warranty 3yrs from date of purchase. microsoft extended the warranty on that issue from 1yr to 3yrs a while back.

well too bad i don't have a receipt or a recollection of date of purchase...my bro gave it to me...

You can try though. I bought mine second hand the same way and they just looked up the serial number and saw it was under warranty. They didn't even ask anything else about date of purchase or anything, it was all in their system about when and where it was bought.
