This is on my '88 K5. Some of the older steering boxes won't work with this swap due to having a bigger splined end on the steering box. I don't know the years or models off hand, but I'm sure someone on here does.

does the non spline part fit over your splined part?

I haven't tried yet...let me go open it up a little and see...you do mean the steering wheel end don't you?

I know I couldn't get one of those shafts on my 1975 burb due to the spline issue.

bust out the welder....

Crap! I just about ruined the rag joint getting the old one off and now I find out I wasted $40...it never ends...I never get one problem solved that two more don't tag along.

Dieselwarrior did an XJ shaft swap on his K5 by combining the two shafts. It did require some welding, but he got it done. I don't think you have a welder though?

No welder...I am back on the rag for now....

Does one end of the XJ shaft at least fit your steering box? The reason I ask is there are two different spline diameters on the steering box. I don't know what the year cutoff was for the splined steering column but you could always swap out the complete steering column for the proper (double D shaft) style as long as the steering box side fits the XJ shaft.

Also, even having the double D steering column it IS NOT a direct plug and play, there is a small amount of grinding required for the pinch bolt to fit.

I'm afraid that even the streering box end of the XJ shaft is too small...

Anybody need an XJ shaft? I need the rag joint from Lares...and I need to get my money back ot of the shaft to get it. :dunno:

Im gonna be doing it on my 73 here in a few days. Going to junkyard on tuesday to get shaft. Depending on what it takes to get it to work you coukd send me yours and I could mod it the same. Just cost you shipping. Not sure if you need it asap or not

Thinking i just need to cut and adapt the stock splines on the xj and weld it up.

I would be willing, but I don't think that even my splined end fits my steering box...I could be wrong but it sure wouldn't get "started' when I pressed on it hard...like it might be 1/8 inch too small...I dunno...

I've seen guys use the U-joints off of a 80's GM full sized van to make a new steering shaft to get rid of the rag joint,by using the original shaft and welding them to it...

I remember swapping a 70's Dodge 4x4 steering shaft with U-joints onto a 80's GM 4x4,it was a bolt on swap...but I was not so lucky when the rag joint on my '77 K2500 failed,it took 3 trips to a junkyard to finally find a shaft with the correct "ends" to fit it--mine had the large splined colum like yours, and yes,GM did use a few different spline sizes on the P/S box input shaft too..I always thought the 4x4's had the large splined colum shaft and 2wd had the "double D" style, but evidently they used both types at will...

I used PTO joints on mine. Pricey but they will NEVER break. I think I have about $160 total in this set up. This is on a 75 blazer also.
