A while back I snagged an XJ shaft from the junk yard. Went to put it in today, and discovered the bottom of my column doesn't mate with the Jeep shaft. I am very, very glad I struggled and properly removed my OEM shaft instead of cutting it like had crossed my mind, that would have left me up Schitz Creek. Did a quick look once I realized it wouldn't work, and found out there are two different column designs. Is there a workaround for this? I wish I would have done some measuring and some picture taking while I had things apart...

So what's different about your column? What does the output look like?

Mine fit fine. Cut a small groove for the pinch bolt and done. Are you using the proper XJ shaft? Pre-94 iirc.

The end of my column isn't a splined shaft, it's a square tube.

I put one on my 89 k5, you should have the same column in your 90 crewcab. Just make sure it's the same style xj shaft as the one in kennyw's pic

sounds like you're putting the XJ on backwards lol.
Or you got one from the wrong year Cherokee

check my name for XJ shafts in classifieds, I've got several pictures IIRC in the thread

Yeah. Sounds like you're using the wrong year shaft or something. My '88 is D-shaped also. Pics of the little groove and the installed shaft:

The xj shaft I have is the same on both ends, round hole with splines and a pinch bolt that passes through a groove on the shaft it clamps to.

All that thread tells me is you sell them and you need the correct ends. Are there different year jeep shafts that have different ends? Is this mod not an option with my column?

Nobody (that I've ever read) has a set year-year to look for.

NO Grand Cherokees
only XJ Cherokees, square body
Sometimes the trucks too

I know by sight looking at the shaft. Otherwise you might have to take it off and compare to the pics. Or compare to the pics before you take it off. Welding the one with the "ears" on top is easier than the one without ears. The ones in the first close up picture. It's all the advice I can give. :dunno:

So there are two different jeep Cherokee shafts? And what "ears" need to be welded?!?!

there are several different ones, but only two will work. One has the ability to be about an inch longer than the other, which is also the one with the "ears".

The one on the left has the "ears" (or tabs, slots, whathaveyou) at the rubber isolator. The rubber tends to wear out by the time we get them, so best thing to do it just weld them solid. I don't feel any difference. You can see the weld in the first post of that thread.

Square on both ends sounds like a grand cherokee shaft. I got one for a few bucks on ebay once and it was that way.
