how does the xj shaft slide? does the smaller portion slide in the larger. i cant figure out how to make the shaft shorter to fit it onto the steering column portion and i dont want to smash it with a hammer.. im confused any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks

You have to take the two halfs of the shaft apart, and remove the plastic clips. While its apart coat the inside with grease, this will allow you to compress it so it can be installed.

There is a great tech article in that section, if you have not read it yet.

There are some variances to them too.. I ended up taking a torch and heating it up and burning the plastic out. Worked good.

Don't try to shorten the shaft!I've a 90 xj and when we towed it home using a chain after the engine quit, the steering shaft got over stressed from not having the power steering pump to assist. The shaft broke at the big rubber union middle of shaft. The shaft is made of 2 parts. The cup looking part is full of vulcanized rubber which adheres to the lower shaft.Once this breaks you need to purchase a new unit. The after market does have a expandable unit.I Have taken 1 in the past and welded a u-joint from a wrecker steering shaft.

Mine had a plastic sleeve type thing on it. I just broke that off and "helped" the shaft shorten itself with a dead blow hammer on a chunk of wood. After breaking it free, I was able to slide it by hand with a little resistance.

I have heard there are different ways they were held together though.

Good luck!!

The two halves slip. Mine took a LOT of persuading wiht a hammer.

my friend did this to his and it worked well for me... i heated it till all the rubber came out, then smashed it with a hammer to get it apart, cleaned it greased and slid back together... i even needed to sand the paint off the smaller shaft it was so tight... thanks for the help guys, its all set now
