I have an 81 K5. What do I need to do to make the XJ shaft upgrade work? It seems as though I have to possibly get a 2WD gear box and a different steering column?? If so, what years do I need?

Thanks!

I *think* your '81 will be ok. If your steering column has the bolt going through it to retain the steering shaft to the column, then I believe it's a "bolt in".

The people that have problems as I recall are those with the older columns that use a pinch bolt, instead of the through bolt.

Someone just installed one of these, and there were quite a few posts on it. Also, I believe there is a tech write-up, if you haven't seen that yet.

Yeah I hi-jacked his thread to ask my question above, but no one answered. I have read the tech article but there is no specific mention of year applications. I also posted my question in the tech article with no response.

IIRC, the XJ shafts in question use a pinch bolt, with a flat sided column connection. Since the '80's trucks (not sure when it first started) use a similar setup, except a through bolt, this is why folks talk about grinding a slot to make the XJ shaft fit. The pinch bolt "locks" the shaft in place as it passes through a groove cut in the column end.

On the older truck columns, the steering shaft end is splined (like the steering gear box shaft) but it DOES use a pinch bolt like the XJ shaft. So folks with the older setup would have to figure out how to adapt their steering column end to the flat sided XJ setup. If that makes any sense. :)

You need to look at your column...If it has a through bolt, then it's got the flat sided column end. If you look at an XJ shaft, and it's flat sided, and has a pinch bolt, that should be the right combination for you.
