Ok so I have the ORD xover steering and love it...however I have been battling a delema for some time now (although the truck has not seen any movement in a year!!!!)

that delema is my power steering keeps on leaking out... emptying the entire pump out.....

ok so I have a new pump, both hoses and belt.....
still happens...

I have started the truck up and with the wheels in the air... turned both ways and held it there to bleed the line......

I can clean the engine cross member and pump.... and after starting the truck I see it dripping out off the cross member.... right from the fill tube...

so Since i replaced the pump and hoses... I figured that would fix it but it didnt....

so now im thinking there is a problem with my gearbox.... and I think I have an idea of what the issue is.... I put a 2wd gear box shaft into my 4wd box. I couldnt get the bolts and hoses off back then but couldnt so a simple shaft swap did the trick....

now i wonder if the middle adjustment (shaft play?) if that is out of adjustment creating back pressure...

so what do you think?

Sounds like the o-rings on the two bolts that hold the can to the pump.
If you don't use the right size ones it will leak out. Not very fast though.

Not really a crossover problem, but a general power-steering problem altogether. Not being there in person to see where you are leaking from, I would say the leak is coming from the pump by your description. There is all kind of place for your pump to leak from. There is the big o-ring for the pump body to the reservoir, the smaller O-rings in back of the pump, and the fittings.
I had a problem with my blazer where it was leaking from the fitting to inverted flare line. I kept tighten the fitting and it would still leak. The hose was new, so I ended up replacing the fitting/pressure valve on the pump. The fitting came from a spare pump I had, and the leak went away.

well that is the thing.... the leak is from the fill cap... im 100% sure...

I can wipe it all down... after filling it up... start the truck... and give a few minutes...then it is running down the pump... pretty good too.....
well guess im gonna wait for a non rainy day and get myself out there.... and see what I can figure out...
my father said he may have a spare 2wd gearbox... if so I will put it on just in case.....

im trying to remember if I even put an 0 ring on behind the hose when I put the new pump on....not sure if I did but it isnt leaking from there...

Lets start with only crossover or do you have hydro assist with it?

all I have is a factory gearbox (to which I couldnt get off the truck)
new high pressure and return hoses
new power steering pump

other than that there is nothing else.....

my father said he has a 2wd gearbox with hoses and pump all attached...

so im going to probably take that setup apart....
drill holes for hydro assist then put that box on my truck....
so we will see.... thus more to come....

my truck has sat ALL last year.... never went out... and currently didnt renew the registration... so I want to
1. fix the leak
2. fix the electrical drain (tried the vmeter on amps and cant find it)
3. make a battery disconnect for the winch ( 3/0 cable!!!! )
4. start sanding to paint the truck..... :wink1:

Did you extend the fill tube?

hmmm wonder if I was to extend the fill tube and fill it up.... if having it run... that it would allow air bubles to come out but not leak out all the fluid......
that maybe something I can try.....

how does one bleed the system?
I did the ... start truck up.. turn wheel each way to full lock and hold it for a few seconds..... did that each way 15 times and still have this problem so not sure if it is a air pocket or not.....

this thread has some useful info, especially the mods to increase flow. My pump did exactly what you are talking about, forcing fluid out the filler cap hole. I did these mods, then put the truck on jack stands and ran it back and forth forever but it finally stopped making bubbles. I do have hydro assist also.

But this mod will make it flow better. I have done it on two pumps now with no ill effects.

I also do not have a fluid capacity extender on mine and it doesn't appear I need to.

well I did the filler tube.... and fired the truck up... after a while it was leaking again sooooo now I have to think about the pressure line... maybe I didnt install the o ring.. if I didnt do it then it wasnt in the box... so tomorrow I will go to autozone and check one of their new pumps.... if it has the o ring I will see if I can get it from them or buy a new one adn install it.... we will see....

dangit!!!!! back of pump question

Ok I got it... well kinda...

seems the back of my pump has the high pressure and non high pressure pump lines... but in addition there are 2 plastic caps (if you will) or plugs.... i pulled them out and looked.. they appeared to be just bolt mounting holes....

well tonight I fired the truck up and guess what.... truck puked out.. .so I looked and right from those lil caps... anyone know what they are for?

I had a similar problem when i swapped the steering sector. Something was leaky fluid, but my level never went down:confused: and then the leak just disappeared. I never figured out what it was though

well if you ever get it again... seems that my problem is now fixed...

header bolt in upper hole... header bolt trimmed down as it was too long filled the bottom hole... pump still moves freely and now I dont see any leaks!!!!! :wink1:

I think my pump was leaking out of the bottom seal that the sector shaft goes thru cuz the only place I ever saw fluid was on the nut that holds the pitman arm on. I thought that seal right there might need replacing but it just stopped one day and hasn't leaked since. Fluid level is still right and everything. Go figure

I have no idea what they are for, but I know every pump I have ever replaced on a Chevy has had them.
They are like a bolt with a stud sticking out of the head.

On mine those bolts hold on a bracket and help to hold the resevoir to the pump. i think one is a bolt and the other a bolt/stud ( like a double ended bolt) so i think they assume you will pull the old ones out of your pump and put them in the new pump. Glad you fixed it, i had a similar problem once. The pump was a tiny bit different than original on one of the machined bracket surfaces on the front of the pump, when i tightened the bracket down it pealed the edge of teh resevoir away from the pump and leaked liek a stuck pig, took me hours to figure that one out.
