Hey all

I'm down to exhaust work on my project. It's not "almost done" but it's almost streetable. :D I have some exhaust pieces I've put together. The truck is at an exhaust shop now, but hasn't be worked on yet. I might call in the morning cause I fear I screwed up.

I'm running a 2" mandrel bent Y pipe. I measured the factory unit and I figured a smooth 2" would be good, but now I'm worried. I am running the pipe back under the oil pan and collecting both near the trans pan on the driver's side. While it tucks in place real nice, I'm starting to think the size is just too small. My 4.3 s10 has a mandrel bent y pipe, but it's 2.25" for crying out loud.

Edelbrock shorty headers w/ 2.5" collector
HEAT RISER opening is only 2"
2" mandrel pre-purchased U shaped pieces (to be cut and put together)
2.25" into 3" "y" collector
3" cat and muffler

2".....pretty sure my '89s was about 2.5" and when it connected to the Cat, went into a 3" or even slightly larger, like a 3.25 or something. I know it wasn't a perfect 3" pipe, cause i had some aftermarket stuff done later and had them use 3" thinkin it was the same, turned out to be just a tad smaller.
 
It will run fine, but you will be losing some top end HP.. I would go with at least 2.25. 2.5 would be better but your Y Pipe in 2.25.
 
well, I took some calipers and measured the stock pipe coming just off the exhaust manifolds. That came to 2". But there was other crazy measurements, seems the pipe was cut or changed, and I found 2.25. Unfortunately I don't have any factory pipe left over, so I can't measure anything but the first 10" of downpipe.
 
So happy. Came out real nice, just need to check on heat riser cause it's super close to the frame, even after tweaking. Guy had a used tip sitting on the ground, threw that on the end for a little bling. :)

Very nice, one of the best Single Exhausts ive seen. The "cross over" is always the tricky part.
 
bout 3/8-1/2" at it's closest point, I plan to ceramic coat the y pipe portion of the exhaust in the near future. Just need to find a place local.
 
yep, I have an oil filter relocation kit that will be going in :)
and the drive shaft kinda looks short, but the truck is only lifted 2-2.5".
 
You might have to ceramic coat/wrap the pipe as close to the pan as it is. The oil gets hot enough as it is without help from the exhaust.
 
if I did anything more than coating, I'd probably apply something to the pan right in that spot. Maybe a patch of something, to reflex and insulate from the heat. I don't like wrap very much, though I have a full roll in the garage.

Once I'm running the truck some more and working the bugs out, this stuff will get straightened out. I still need to drop the oil pan again, swap oil pumps and seal the pan better. Also need to put the filter remote mount on. As of today, I've only got about 17 miles on the truck since the engine went in and exhaust work done. :)
 
I'm guessing between the lift and the ORD crossmember you gained the clearance. I would maybe check into just wrapping the exhaust? Its like a band aid to fix the wound but maybe a combo of wrap and jet-hot coating?
 
You could weld a shield to the bottom of the pan or pipe. Like the way chevy starters have the built in heat shield on some of them.
 
i would not run my pipe that close or even un coated/wraped/shielded in the engine or tranny pan area. way to much heat transfer if you ask me.
