Year of my burb

bought my suburban a few weeks ago from a guy who said it was a '73. He told me (after i bought it) that someone had changed out the dash to an '86. He claims when he switched out the dash that he took the old vin tag off and put it in the center concole and never got around to remounting it. This is all very suspicious to me, and i wanna know when ordering parts what year to look for. is there anywhere else besides the glove box (which has an '86 vin taped to the inside), or the engine or tranny which are not orig that i could find a vin#?

A '73 shouldn't have the VIN on the dash anyways, I think it should be drivers side door jam area. The Dash VIN started in 81.

Not to sure about that Rene, I remember my old 75 burb having the metal VIN plate on the dash in the corner. Then there was also the sticker in the door jamb.

if there was one in the door jamb they removed it or painted over it. ill have to post some pics and see what you guys say.

Having had on my property at various times a 74 ( friends ) , 75 ( my truggy ) , 76 ( got for body ) , 77 ( sold to jason4x4 ) , 78 ( Sub ) , and an 83 ( my first baby ) , I can tell you that the vin didn't go to the dash until 78 .

All the models prior to 78 had it on the drivers door jamb near the door striker .

X2. The earliest of all the crap in my yard carrying a dash VIN is a '79, but I don't have any '78s. All prior are in the doorjamb.

Dash vins were required in 81, different manufacturers moved them up there in various years when they felt like it during 81 or prior.
