Yet ANOTHER gear pattern thread

Really? Changing the pinion depth .003" has a noticeable effect on how the locker unlocks? Are there some references for that?
Didn't mean to imply that it would. I just know that contact pattern is too close the inner ring gear (in the second pic) for my liking. Pattern should be to middle or to the outer part of the ring gear. Per 2nd pic, the pencil is a little too deep in the pencil sharpener.

Checked pinion bearing preload, was like WTF! 12 IN LBS? I know I set it up for 25

Check 14 bolt bible. 5 to 15 in lbs for used bearings. These have about 700 miles on them. Proly fine
 
Update

Drove without rear d shaft
Learned 2 things

Front shaft is VERY UNHAPPY above 20 mph. Not a surprise. 4in lift, d60, 205, in a blazer. I'll have to do some shimming

No spin did not unlock going straight. Made the normal ratcheting when turning and such
Totally livable. Acting like it should
So it looks like vibes, even tho not felt Mite be the issue.

Gonna sort out the front first so I can get up more speed to really test it. Plus it's more straight forward of a fix. And less expensive lol

IF you find you need a CV on the rear shaft, there are a couple of Neapco part numbers in my build thread for (I think) Super Duty 1410 CV's.
 
Not an expert but i read somewhere one needs some backlash for the Detroit to unlock. Sounds like your backlash is at or near the min.

Unlocking or locking has to do with the cross pin and torque. Nothing to do with backlash. Not trying to be mean. Just want to keep good info in the thread
