So I am soon to be in the market for a 37-38" radial tire for my new 72' blazer I just picked up. I currently have 39.5 boggers and 4.56 gears, I like the combo and can live with the freeway rpms. Although I am wanting to get away from the horrible road manners that the bias ply tires have and want to get into a radial. So what are some good options? I am looking for all the pros and cons of whatever tires. So lets hear it guys. Thanks
 
screw radials... wander all over the road but be superior offroad..

i have some ssr's and they do awesome on the street, for a tire that performs good off road they work really good on road, for a street driven rig you cant beat them
 
if bfg made a 37" mt for a 15" rim, i'd stay with them, great all around tire. but i'm looking hard at either the 37" ssr or trxus mt. i know the ssr has a good rep but haven't heard too much about the trxus or how long it lasts
 
i bought some radials thinking my road problems would be solved...wrong....but i blame it on my 15" rim, i have 38x15.50 tsl radials and they have almost a pound of weight on them(spin balanced) and they are fine around town, but soon as i hit 55-60+ they act like a bogger,jumping all over the place,so whatever you do, dont get 15" rim with big tires....too much sidewall. my friend has some SSR's same exact side of mine but with a 16" rim and they are perfect.....hope this helps...not trying to highjack here but does anybody know if theres a structural difference between tsl radials and SSR's? are the SSR's somehow "more" radial?
 
if it is going to see more street then trail I would go with a Goodyear MTR. they make them all the way up to a 40". for more trail use and occasional street duty I would run a SSR or trxus MT. whichever you can get a deal on.

I ran boggers on the street and loved it. they sound great, create scary looks from other drivers and you can pull off into the woods anytime you want.

My old 39.5in. Boggers were the best riding tires I had on my CUCV and they were not balanced. I don't see why people are bothered by the sound they make on the street, I love it too. Anyways, I agree with the MTR recommendation. Ground Hawgs are good too or hawg radials if you don't want flat spots in the morning. The radials go up to a 38 I think. I don't like SSR's so much just because I've seen too many with punctured sidewalls, otherwise they are fine on the street.
 
id say hawgs... ive heard nothing but horror stories about hawg radials and SSRs weigh a TON, your gonna get like 40k out of bias hawgs and from what i hear they dont flat spot as bad as swampers although i dont have one problem with my bias swampers. personaly id just nut up and stay swamper but if you insist on new tires id look into that
 
Toyo mt's

I have the Toyo mt's on my DD- 315/75 r17- roughly 35's Have about 13k on them and they are just starting to show wear. Had the at's before that and got 52k on those. I like em

For a good radial tire, I'd look at the Parnelli Jones DirtGripz and the uber-rare BFG Krawler (39")...

It kind of depends how WIDE you want to go, and what rim size you are working with... a lot of the newer tires don't come in 16.5", and most of the radials are too skinny for my taste.

From what I've gathered from your previous posts, the '72 is going to be your nice-looking street truck, so the appearance is going to be a more important criteria than real offroad capability....

didnt know I was.... hard / soft who cares.. works for me... at least in my area they work really good....:wink1:
 
Your right, It will probably never see any offroad time, at least not for awhile, as soon as the new paint is on it will be really hard to want to take it anywhere other than pavement. so it will be on pavement 99% of the time. I love the bogger sound on pavement, but they wear way to quick for me, and at 18" wid they grab the ruts in the hiway on the way to work, not a fun deal. I would also like for the wife to be able to drive it without having to worry about her taking out innocent children on the side of the road. Whatever tire i end up with will have to fit under my 72' with 8"springs and a zero-rate, and I dont want any rubbing or to cut up anything.
