Hopefully this wasn't covered in another thread, maybe it will help other folks out too.

Truck is currently all blue, with be painting two tone white and blue, single stage urethane.

Situation:

Parts facing Vegas sun, no clearcoat.

Parts partially facing Vegas sun, looks like Goldmember's skin.

Parts not facing Vegas sun, still has clearcoat.

Whats the best way to handle this?

 
depends on how crazy/involved you're gonna get...


you really should prime or seal it... if not, your chances of a f*ck up, go up exponentially..


but at a minimum, you need to featheredge the he!! out of those clear areas.... and get rid of the smaller patches.. at a minimum...

wet cross block the heck out of it... depending if you're gonna prime, or try to go right to paint will determine which grit...

if you're gonna prime, go with 180 to 220..... if your gonna just try to paint it, 320 to 400..

you can do it with a DA too... just gotta make sure your getting decent feathedges, many don't know how to with a machine..... palm sanders work very well for feathedging, just a bit slower than a DA...





keep in mind a couple things... you'll more than likely sand thru some areas and need at least a spot prime here and there... let alone if you have some dents/bodywork to do...

also, another reason to prime/seal, or at least spot prime all bare spots AND your featheredges is this..... whenever you have an "exposed" edge, from a featheredge, you take a risk of paint solvents eating into it and causing cringes...


I generally advise people to get to as much of an even substrate as possible, a minimum of featheredges... personally, I'd at least be sanding all that clear off, and be into just color and some factory primer, or better yet, all factory primer...
 
Thank you! Yes, my plan was to spot prime it, and just sand the rest. But I think in the long run it will just be best to remove ALL the clear from the whole thing. I was hoping to avoid doing that all the way down the big slab sides of the thing, but hey, it's only time. :D

Im holding off a bit for now, in the next couple weeks I'll have the lift and 35's on it. I want to see if I have to modify the fender at all. At that point I'm going to start digging in.
