can I swap a yoke out on a rear end without throwing the ring and pinion out of wack?

What axle are you dealing with? Most axles use crush sleeves and to do the job correctly requires a new crush sleeve and a tear down of the axle to install it. Many people however have been successful of swapping Yokes without installing a new crush sleeve. I would say if it's a DD then do it correctly but if it's a trial rig it's not as critical but still needs to be as close as possibly so you don't ruin a pinion bearing or even worse a set of gears.

its a 12 bolt rear in a mud racer, it is all new and has never been driven.
