York Question

I'm in the process of planning out the rear of my truggy thing. A 5 gallon tank is as tall as the fuel cell I plan on, so I see no harm in running one.

However, based on 10 or so consecutive educated guesses, a york at idle would take 4-5 minutes to fill it to 120 PSI. Call me a picky bastard but that's too slow.

Everyone with a york, if you would, post up your air tank size and how long it takes to go from 0-pressure. I'll run a 2.5 gallon if the 5'er takes too long but there will be almost no space saved by running the smaller tank.

Mine will fill a 6 gal tank to 120psi in under a minute. It fills the tank to 125 psi in under 20 seconds at 2000 RPM. If I put a brick on the pedal, I can run a die grinder. I have a serp setup with a Kilby overdrive pulley.

Mine is 13 gallon and it take's 3-4 mins to fill to 130#'s at idle 700 rpm.

at idle it fills my 5 gallon tank in under a minute. With the high idle kicker on (1400 rpm) it takes between 10-20 seconds.

Thanks guys, I knew I must have missed something in the calcs somewhere. I'll either get a 5 gallon from e-bay or a 6.3 gallon from surplus center.

Mine is the ford as well. There is one other thing to consider though. On my rig the 5 gallon tank works, but 1st chance I get I will be changing it out for a larger tank or combine 2 5's. Just not enough storage for me.

i run a 2.5 gallon. i would not waste to space that a 5 gallon tank takes up.

If your worried about fill time, why not just turn it on and fill the tank before you need to use it? I dont think it would hurt to run a pressurized tank?

I think I'm gonna pick up a 6.3 gallon from surplus center. Pretty much the perfect dimensions for what I need.

beater74: I said it before, a 2.5 gallon will save me nearly no space. The fuel cell is as tall or taller than the the 5 gallon, and the air tank will sit right in front of it lying down. Running a 2.5 would get me 3" of room height-wise and nothing else. That's not enough for me to consider running a tank with 1/2 the capacity.

What style of yorks are you guys running, I read that there are 3 kinds (stroke length difference or something like that)? Does it make a big difference because the ones you see on ebay you cant really tell from the pics which is which?

There are a couple of tricks to tell what size they are. The most definite is the edge on the front of the crankshaft. There should be a diagram in the tech section here showing what's what.

I've got two 10ci Yorks on the bench. One good, one non-op sold to me by a deadbeat assclown. Works for a mock up that I don't care about dropping though.
