Ok, so I just got back from a half way successful calling adventure.

Well, my neighbor and I got bored today so I said "Hey man, why dont we go callin' with our AR's? He says "Yeah! Sounds good to me!"

My neighbor is the same age as me, and we are both into the same stuff, and whenever he is in the country, he is usually always over at my house. Anyways, I fire up Hermy (my 71 blazer) and I go over to pick him up from his house. well, we were pullin out of his drive, and I asked him where he wanted to go. He suggested we go up to his summer pasture, so we did. got some good wheelin in, but didnt see much. We were on the lookout for coyotes, fox, whatever would move, even deer, beings that seson closes this weekend.

well, didn't see much in his summer pasture, and it was starting to get darker. So, we decided we better get some calling in, since we didnt have a charged up spotlight. so we went over by the creek, by a bunch of old hay bales, I got my ghillie suit on. Then we got set up and I started calling, Daniel with his DPMS 20" AR, and me with my Bushmaster 16". the hay stack was to my 2 oclock about 20 foot away. I start calling, and stop, then Daniel would start calling, etc. etc. well about 10 minutes into it, I start calling again, looking to my 10-11 oclock, because that is where i expected the coyotes to come in from....

I start calling again, and about 10 seconds into it, I catch something black moving for me out of the corner of my eye.....

*The following is in slow motion Play by Play*

The hair on the back of my neck raises instantly. I slowly turn my head, and see two big white rings about 7 feet away from my boot, I see Daniel shift his rifle and shoulder it, and I did the same. When that Raccoon was about 5 foot away from my boot, still coming at a trot through the snow, we opened fire.

40 shells later It layed there, with my face and rifle covered in it's blood. OH MY GOD!!!!!! Talk about adrenaline! WOOH!

I will NEVER forget this! I just wish I had my camera!

lol I always take my .45. I did ask santa to bring me a coyote choke for the 870. I had a coyote come within 20' of me a few months back. Ever since then I always have my side arm or the 870 to clean up the close calls.

have ya drawn blood with it yet? how do you like it? Have you put it on paper?

A guy last night near Grand Junction Colorado, was calling Coyotes in some type of a blind. He must be pretty good at calling because 5 coyotes came into the blind and were hungry. He was on his way to the hospital for treatment of bite wounds. :eek1:

One of my predator guns is a Savage combo gun. It's a .223 on top and a 12ga mag below. The hammer is selectable with a thumb flick. It's about the ultimate yote gun, as you can never tell whether they'll stay out there or come in real close.

I had one come running down a mountain and slide into my back. I gave him a 12ga enema as he continued on his way (after scaring the piss outta both of us). I was just hoping my partner would shoot him off my back if he was a mountain lion.

Now that sounds like the right weapon.

Someone clue me in here, I have never hunted them before. Does the call make them a little crazy?

crazy? no. the only thing a call does is imitate a rabbit, or something dieing usually, unless you are howling.

If you dont move, and you arent one solid color its kinda hard for them to see you. Most of the time, though, they will try to get downwind of you and sniff you out.

yeah, Ive never even really heard of anyone using a blind for yote huntin.

yeah, if that... I usually just sit on the edge of a hill where i can see good. Of course, I do have a ghillie suit i use too lol

I used to have one (may still) that I duck hunted in. It was nice on wade hunts to be able to just lean on a tree. That would explai why they didn't see you.

The one thing I've learned from yote hunting is to expect anything. Sometimes they'll be cautious, sometimes they'll come in so hot they end up in your lap. Sometimes you won't even see them, but you'll find a steaming pile of yote turd on the walk back to the truck (it's happened more than once to me).

It depends on the season, mating status, belly fullness (or not), horniness (or not), spoilage for a fight (or not), or just plain curiousity. I've killed about 50 or so and missed even more. They are fascinating critters. They're one of the few species that THRIVE on human sprawl.

When the world ends there'll be cockroaches and coyotes left over.

Man, if that doesn't sum it up, I don't know what does! Living out here on the fringe of the desert, you really don't know what to expect other then them on a daily basis.

Still waiting on it. It is supposed to be here on Wednesday. I put my lower together last night. The lower is a CMMG. The CMMG fits my Bushmaster 16" upper better than the Bushmaster, nice and tight. I tried to put my accu-wedge in and the bolt wouldnt move, took it out and it functions perfectly. I am going to have to get out and put some rounds down range next weekend. My only downfall now is I need a good scope.

you know, im not gonna preach and dont take this the wrong way, but you should check out Sightron scopes. They used to make the glass for Leupold, and they are just as clear as Leupolds. and, they can be had for about 1/2 price of leupolds. Just a suggestion. I have one on my .204 and just bought another one for my 22-250 with the target dot reticle.
