ok, i was outside taking pictures of a go-kart im trying to sell, next to my 88 blazer. all of a sudden i hear it start to turn itself over. i dont know how, i have the keys in my pocket, and there is nobody in the truck??? i dont know what to do, so i get in it and put the e-brake on, incase it tries to drive itself, and then put the key in and try to start it up. im able to start it up, but the engine then revs really high by itself, so i immediately turn it off, so it doesnt blow up. when its finally turned off, it still is trying to turn over. finally after about 20 more seconds of that it jus quits. and everything is quiet like nothing happened. i then go and unhook the battery to prevent it from doing that again.

the whole thing happened prolly in less than 2 minutes
what happened? has anybody ever experienced anything as farfetched? what do i do now?

thanks guys

yup.. about 20 yrs ago with a 1969 Barracuda... uglyass car....

but i digress.. mine was the ignition wire to the starter had chafed thru and shorted on the main lug.... thats the first place i'd be checking...

freaked me and my buds out big time... ;)

Bat Man Was Just Starting His Car But You Wont Let Him Have It Back.

It Will Drive Itself Back To The Batcave If You Are Not Careful-

My buddies 73 k10 use to start dieseling after being shutdown for more than half an hour. I thought it would be to cold to do that by then but those motors with 400k on them do strange things at odd times.

Heck with the movie, you got blazer gremlins. I have some too. They sit in the back and drink gasoline and sometimes open my powersteering box and let the flluid out.

My '69 Chevy van did the same thing, but in-gear. As I got out and slammed the door, it started to drive away. Engine didn't crank, just starter pulling the truck forward. Freaked me out!!!

Was there a Jeep nearby. My K5 acts odd around Jeep's. The brakes seem like they don't want to work while I am behind a Jeep on or off the trail. I guess the old deer (78 K5) is just trying to do me a favor and rid us of a few Jeeps.

well i rehooked the battery up and started it, it started fine nothing strange.
so it could be the ignition wire shorting out?

whats really funny is that the guy before me painted "OUTER LIMITS" on the tailgate, i havent had the money yet to sand it down and paint over it. haha. on top of that, the original owner died, so i bought it from his wife. purely coincidence? i think not. lol

Sounds like a short somewhere... but where?

Only time I have seen that is durring car fires. I guess wires start melting together etc. That's one, on my list of reasons NOT to stand in front of car that's burning, while I'm putting it out. I generaly try to stay off to the side if I can. Those old 5 mile an hour, gas charged bumpers are another.. OUCH.

Mine did the same thing i was sitting in front of the bbq place and The truck wont crank so i got out and called my da don teh cell well as im on teh phone the starter began cranking th etruck wa sin gear no parking brake!(Shi$). poped teh hood and removed the neg battery cable before it ran up the fence. Turned out that the main power wire had loosened up and rotated shorting with the smaller neg. termail on teh starter solienoid.

haha funny thread! :D
yeah has to be solenoid wire shorted on cable stud on solenoid

couldnt really be anything else other than ignition switch maaaaaaaybe but doubt it

good luck

thanks guys, ill check it out.

i guess it was a good thing it was in park then, my neighbor had jus parked infront to me to show off his 2004 BMW 325ci. i dont think it would have had any trouble running that thing over, and then heading for the house!!! haha

I know on my car a solenoid caused the same thing to happen but that is an 86 Diesel Topaz. FORD.... I replaced the two solenoids on the car and never had a problem since.
