I drive my rusty '86 C10 from central Michigan to central Ohio every week. I got home last week, and the next day I was walking past my C10 in the driveway looking at it from the back, and I notice this hoop hanging off the axle tube.

Hmm...I think, WTF is that? Upon further inspection, I notice it's the edge of the brake drum, rusted clean off in almost a perfect ring, and was hanging off the axle tube. :eek1: Didn't seem to affect wheel balance, the main part of the drum is still in tact.

Rust is taking it's toll quickly on 'old browny

That was taken in Sept 2005 when I rebuilt the 4.3L in it. Now, there are literally no rockers, no cab corners, several quarter sized holes in the doors and fenders, the area above the rear wheels is almost up to the top of the bedside, the drivers floor hole is inching inward a couple millimeters a month. I had to make up some new rear bumper mounts because the OEM ones rusted almost completly away, and that's a step bumper with 3/8" plate bumper mounts to support the hitch, they were gone, literally, gone.
Amazingly, the inner panels on the bed are still perfect, well, from the inside, looking in the bed, there's no holes or rust anywhere and I can still put stuff in there to be protected from the elements.
One of my customers always asks me how I can drive it. When I did the motor, I did almost everything under the hood, belts, water pump, hoses, distributor, I also put all stainless steel brake and fuel lines on it, had the gas tanks re-nu'd (epoxy coated inside and out) and had the d-shaft balanced with new ujoints, it runs excellent and goes down the road straight and smooth.
I just wonder how long before the seat falls thru the floor! :doah:
I just need to finish the fiberglass K5 before this one falls apart, literally.

Too bad the old trucks cant last forever.

I had purchased an 86 C10 about 5 years ago that looked just like yours and had a cap too & same colour. 4.3L automatic for $200. Truck was strong low milage and almost new winter tires, the only thing wrong with the truck was the body, the previous owner had left it sitting in tall grass for a year and the frame and under body had been weakend by the grass. It was too bad cause the truck worked great.

That's the first time I've seen the rust eat away the hood before the fenders. It's got to take a while for the whole engine to rust away.

When I was a kid my Dad had a Scout with big holes in the..., well the everything. After he got a good truck it took us a while to stop picking up our feet everytime we went through water.
