I drive my rusty '86 C10 from central Michigan to central Ohio every week. I got home last week, and the next day I was walking past my C10 in the driveway looking at it from the back, and I notice this hoop hanging off the axle tube.
Hmm...I think, WTF is that? Upon further inspection, I notice it's the edge of the brake drum, rusted clean off in almost a perfect ring, and was hanging off the axle tube.
Didn't seem to affect wheel balance, the main part of the drum is still in tact.
Rust is taking it's toll quickly on 'old browny
That was taken in Sept 2005 when I rebuilt the 4.3L in it. Now, there are literally no rockers, no cab corners, several quarter sized holes in the doors and fenders, the area above the rear wheels is almost up to the top of the bedside, the drivers floor hole is inching inward a couple millimeters a month. I had to make up some new rear bumper mounts because the OEM ones rusted almost completly away, and that's a step bumper with 3/8" plate bumper mounts to support the hitch, they were gone, literally, gone.
Amazingly, the inner panels on the bed are still perfect, well, from the inside, looking in the bed, there's no holes or rust anywhere and I can still put stuff in there to be protected from the elements.
One of my customers always asks me how I can drive it. When I did the motor, I did almost everything under the hood, belts, water pump, hoses, distributor, I also put all stainless steel brake and fuel lines on it, had the gas tanks re-nu'd (epoxy coated inside and out) and had the d-shaft balanced with new ujoints, it runs excellent and goes down the road straight and smooth.
I just wonder how long before the seat falls thru the floor!
I just need to finish the fiberglass K5 before this one falls apart, literally.
