Your first race track experience

First time to the strip was Cedar Creek in the early 90's. Cool little 1/8 mile track & it's still there.
We had just put a new cam, heads and a 9" in my old 70 AMX and the track was having a "true" street car shoot out, so we figured what the hell, we can do this. Cars just needed to be tagged & inspected, have full exhaust and no slicks where allowed.

Sounded easy enough. The car was loaded on the trailer and we got the exhaust and inspection done at a buddy's shop on the way.

Everything was looking promising. There were 3 of us trying to pull this off. 2 of us had never been to the track before and the car had less than 20 minutes of run time on a completely new set up... what could go wrong?

Well, apparently, everything.
The new headers cooked the old starter, so we had to pop the clutch coming off the trailer so the damn thing would start. Found a starter at the local Chief's and we were back in business.

Finally made it to the burn out box and the car sputtered and died. Learned a pretty valuable lesson about cheesy crimp connectors!

Third try wasn't the charm either. Burnout went well and managed to stage ok. Plan was to launch around 2k and once the car was rolling, just mat it. Instead, I just dumped the clutch around 4500, blew the tires off and heard a huge bang from the rear end. Somehow, the left rear spring shot part of the lower leaf out the back. Only thing that worked in our favor was the spring cleared the car in the box behind us. This was also my first red light.

At that point we loaded the car back up and it has yet to make a pass down the strip to this day.

First time at a track with an actual race car was Thunder Valley. It was a friend of a friends IHRA Nostalgia Funny Car and a group of drivers rented the track for the day. It was a blast. We were just slave labor. We weren't allowed to touch much but got real good at filling oil jugs and cleaning everything.

Englishtown, probably 2000 or so for the Summer Nationals. I remember my uncle taking us and walking into the pits when they were warming up a Top Fuel car and the nitro hitting you. As a 10 year old it was awesome.

Went to a few Monster Truck things before that though, I think my first time was in Nassau Colosseum when I was like 3 or 4.

I do not remember my first track experience. Mom told stories of going to various types of racing when I was a baby. Slept in the well behind the rear seat in the Impala on the way to Texas from So. Ca. Dad built engines and chassis for various types of racing, so we were at racing venues repeatedly.

My grandpa chariot raced, does that count? Like Wade, I was too young to remember much but I have pictures and I remember the chariots parked around the farm property. The last time he road one was for county fair parade. He would have been in his late 70's or early 80's. IIRC they pulled it behind a pickup.

Then I did barrel racing and other horse riding stuff as a kid. My favorite was the flag race.

I think 95% of the people that take their car to the track for the first time, have fun, but they are disappointed in their ET, and want to go back and improve on it! That's what hooks you right there.

My first time at the track as a spectator I don't remember because we went most weekends when I was too little to remember. I remember one day my Dad won the bracket race at Byron, drove his truck to Union Grove (~78 C10 stepside), and won again, won at two different tracks the same day! My mother and siblings and I followed him in the old Suburban my Mom used to drive. I also remember watching at the finish line another time when I was little, and I saw my Dad fly up on the car in his brothers El Camino, and slam on the brakes! It was my first real lesson on braking out. Because he slammed on the brakes, let the other guy take the stripe, and won, I thought, how is that possible?!

My first time driving down the track, I swore I was going to be in the 12s, I was 18 at the time, I only managed a 13.27@102, I was dissapointed. I had built a 388 for it myself after Dad taught me with a couple other engines, a SBC and a BBC. I had to fix that, for the next many years every time I went back I was better and better, 12s, 11s, 10s, 9s, then 8s.

I also ran my 2000 Buell Lightning X1 a couple times at the track back when I had it from 2001 - 2005 or so, would run 12 flat pretty much. It was a 1200cc Harley Engine in a crotch rocket type frame.

You’re right about the time slip
Dissapoints a lot of people, like the dyno!

Yep. Parking lot time quotes always cracked me up.

Me "Where is the time slip?"
Them "I didn't keep it"
Me "I am sorry, but everyone keeps their best time slips. Here are mine." Pulls them out of the wallet.
Them
Me "Put up or shut up. We will see you Wednesday night at the grudge races."

1990’s mission raceway BC,
Test and tunes and pro street events with my uncles 70 Chevelle my dad built. My dad is working on the car, my uncle is watching and that’s me in the chair. My uncle is working getting the VHS of these races made into digital. I can’t remember the first time. I believe my grandfather took this photo. A32EA7B7-7DE9-420A-8553-0B43DCC7C89D.png
