Assuming a reasonable price, if we were to offer powder coating as an option, would you pop for it?

tough to say Kert
certain things, yes
most other things, nah

I did PC the tube doors, but in a not-so-basic color

Nope I tend to scratch things on rocks. Spray paint is easy to touch up

I totally hear where you guys are coming from. Some things, will probably never touch a rock.

for instance, if you hit your dash with a rock.... Not that I haven't seen it get very close, probably not something I'd worry about.

There are some other things as well, like spring plates, engine mounts and etc.

If we are to offer it, odd colors will not be an issue.

personally of the stuff I've got from you, that wasn't going to get further welding perhaps I would have given it consideration, mostly the beadlocks.
If you considering setting up a powder coating division, I could see other outside work coming your way from that.

I think the option to have stuff powder coated would be really cool but not necessarily an automatic coating on all parts.

I got local media blast and powder coating shop to me with good rates . and if no powder coat I got buddys who paint. :thumb:

As a manufacturer, I would caution against it. Increases lead time, increases inventory, increases risk of shipping damage claims, one more reason for a customer to not be happy, inordinate time spent with customer getting special orders just right, people complaining that the shade doesn't match what they already bought, parts being late because the powder coated had a big job to run. Add to that your packing costs go up because you are trying to protect the finish and ups will still find a way to screw it up. All for what? A bit of markup on outsourced powdercoating?

100% of the time when we are cnc machining parts and have a choice to ship with or without finish I always quote without finish.

I wouldn't pay for powder coating even if it were offered.

Some of the replies here are interesting.

When I pull my truck build apart to finalize welding and send things off for paint and or powder coat, I see a lot of parts that will be powder coated.

Just a quick mental list of things...

Engine crossmember
Trans crossmember
Dash (already is powder coated)
Diff covers
spring plates
shackles
Wheels (already done)
Some engine brackets
turbo intake tubing and snorkel
bumpers

That's just a quick mental note.

I get the idea of being able to touch things up with paint. My crew cab, a lot of the parts listed above were done with a rattle can and it was a daily driver. Wasn't long and they needed to be touched up. and again, and again, and again. Originally the wheels were painted. looked like hell in no time. Eventually I had them powder coated and the finish lasted much longer.

This is all good information though. Yea's or nea's carry the same value in this poll.

I don't want to say a whole lot about the plans right now but if things continue the way they are headed there will be an announcement at some point.

I dont think its a bad idea. I just personally dont like it because I end up modding alot of parts I buy anyway it seems, and weld etc to them.

I said yes. For most stuff like spring plates and even diff covers, I don't need it. But for very visible stuff like bumpers and rocker protection, I'd go for it. I used to have a swing away tire carrier bumper on my K5 and I thought I'd just rattle-can it so I could touch up, but like Kert said, it kept needing to be touched up and looked crappier and crappier all the time because I was trying to "touch up" on top of rust, etc. That was in Iowa. I'm hoping I can get away with rattle-can here in Tucson, but we'll see.

If you do it, how long until you're set up?

My JK bumper came coated in "2 stage zinc enriched textured black" and it looks great and seems very durable. Some coated stuff seems like it'll flake off if you look at it wrong.

Yeah, like Mastiff said, some coatings are terrible. A lot of my CPP stuff is already flaking off even with zero miles :(

You know, after staring in my truck for a while I guess there are several things on it that could have been powder coated. Spring plates, steering parts, engine crossmember, transmission crossmembers, shackle flip brackets, shackles, etc.…

Having the option is nice. But lots of stuff I bought from you ended up being modified in some way, eventually. Wheels for sure I would have powder coated. But for something less extreme of a vehicle, I would probably have more stuff powder coated cause I know I wouldnt be bashing it off trees or anything like that

I think it would be advantageous to offer it. I was thinking and there are a couple things I might powder coat but the that's on the jimmy. Horton will always just get paint. I was asked about it enough I did eventually strike a deal for cheaper than normal powder coating from a local guy

I think we got the information we needed to make an informed decision. There is a lot more to it then just this one question.

When I can state something with certainty, I will definitely be letting you guys know what's going on.

Thanks to all who answered the poll and left some comments. Very much appreciated.
