I have broke several 30 spline outers on my Dana 60 in my K5, so I ordered Yukon 35 spline outers.

They don't fit through the knuckle. Avery said he ground on the knuckle, Heath said he ground on the shafts. I was just curious what everyone else has done, or ran into. Even with competing brands of shafts.

I did a little on the shaft and a little on the inside of the knuckle to lessen impact to either.

Should be pretty minor though. Just the high corners that are hitting yes?

I ground the corners of the shafts to get the clearance. I was told by the vendor it wouldn't void any warranties because "it was an issue that they were aware of". It only took a few minutes on each one.

Read this over at pirate clicky

I've had the new 35 spline Yukons sitting on the bench for a month or 2. Maybe I will attempt mine this weekend since my fence build got put on hold.

i know the idea of upgrading is so that you dont have to replace them all the time. but the logic i heard was that if you grind the knuckle, and have to replace the shafts, you wont have to grind again. the knuckle will be good to go no matter how many shafts you kill...
just a thought.

That's why I ground the knuckles. I don't have a spare Yukon but a few of my buddies do. If I had to borrow one of theirs on the trail i'd feel pretty stupid searching for a grinder.

The zerk fitting?

Martin

The super joints have a needle zerk fitting on them. They don't use needle bearings just bushings and need to be greased a decent amount

BTW I have installed may of those shafts and have always ground the knuckle out.

it doesn't take much and its just 2 spots you really need to do.

Can't you just install the zerks after you have the shaft in place? That is what I have done.

Also, is it worth the money to go with the solid Spicer U-joints over greasable Precisions?

Martin

I had the same problem. Difference being that I had purchased blems (Never again!!!) and had to grind a friggin TON to get things to fit without binding.

Oh well, its done now :doah:
