Front lift is pretty much nil.
Rear drop is about 2-1/2”.
I bought this camper with the intention of using it in the CCDRW 76. The 8’ length will be better suited for that bed. But as long as its the only camping house I have, I’m putting it to use in the Dmax. I hope to remodel the unit before final use in the 76. I really only need a bed, shower and a shitter. There is no shower in the unit now, and I cant even sit down on the shitter without having the door open. Its made for small women and kids! I give $1500 for it as is, figuring the appliances and basic structure was worth that. Its been tweaked on the outside a few times, replacement side sheetmetal, a bunch of caulking slobbered on in places….it needs some work!

An unremarkable fuel mileage of 11.5 for the trip to IA, SD racing w Kert for labor day weekend. Was nice to have my own place everywhere I went. Kert supplied a generator for electric use, but didn’t really use it that much, as the nights were cool. Took a shower at the trackshowers, and used their crapper too. I cant even sit on the crapper in this camper, so I just used it for pissing through the night. Fuel prices a low of 4.68 in IA to 5.49 in IL.
Truck sure didn’t seem for lack of power, so I’ll chalk up the shitty mileage to wind resistance, although I was always less than 75mph. And a lot of 60-65 two lane in IA.
Oil pressure cold is 70+ at idle, and about 25# hot. Going down the road is in the pic.

Plan on some upgrades to help with MPG?

Any ideas?
Im not driving it much at all with the price of diesel. I think Ive filled it up 5 times since April, save the trip to SD.
if anything for now, its exhaust. Its still the original.
it needs shocks too, again originals.
267k on it now.

I would definitely replace the shocks! I don't know how much the exhaust system is restricting things. My son's '03 has a 4" system from the down pipe , but he has a small tune from a guy who does awesome work, but can't anymore because of where he works now. So I don't know what a factory truck can gain, but it seems like letting it flow better keeps the EGTs down on all of them.

To get better mpg… Stock size tires. Cold air intake. Egr delete. Open the exhaust. Small tune. RPMs between 1500-1800. Might see 2-4 mpg better with less strain on the motor.

At least that’s what the Duramax Gurus tell me… lol!

I agree Zim, the wind resistance makes a larger difference in mileage than weight, at least in the midwest. That might be different in the mountains, not sure if the downhills balance out the uphills, they might.

If you don't drive it much the upgrades will likely not pay for themselves. But if you just want more torque, no one will disagree with upgrades! ha ha

This Friday I am shipping off parts for customers. Would you like to be on the list for a good used LBZ mouthpiece for $20+Shipping? Send pm. The LLY Oem mouthpiece is claimed to be very restrictive, causes overheating and you would get better mpg with the LBZ mouthpiece.

Another thing that comes to mind is the 5 speed vs 6 speed transmission. On a good day, my old LLY Dually crewcab was lucky to get 15mpg empty.

The Banks Ecomind tuner is claimed to to get better MPG plus more power as well.

His is an 06 lly, he has the 6 speed trans and it is a lbz engine with a lly tune, so it is called a lly yet.

LBZ was short lived, late 06/early 07. The 06LLY is pretty much the LBZ, save for the tune, not sure about the intake mouthpiece, got a pic of the LBZ unit? If its different than mine, I would be interested.
As Heath mentions, dumping a thousand or more to save a couple hundred don't make much sense, but who has to be sensible?
I got as good as 19 coming home from Fl. with it, tires were 245’s. mileage went down when I put on 265’s, and a bunch of new parts (see post 61 for the start of maint and mods) Gets 17 now empty on highway.

Looking back on your photos, it looks like you have the correct LBZ mouth piece. I am thinking it is the tire size. I just went to 265’s but have not clocked mpg yet because it is in the shop getting all the goodies installed right now. I think a light tune would be the next best thing for ya.

Measured miles by gps shows a reduction of 2% compared to odometer on miles traveled. 70mph = 72 actual.
I may check into a tune and exhaust.

I’m reading the 06 LLY/LBZ is exactly the same except it has a LLY ecm tune on it. Post 5 and post 8

Also the Oem air filter box is rated up to 500hp but I did notice a big bump in power and better mpg when I swapped over to a banks oiled filter/cold air intake.

Edit: The Banks lower air scoop is a great idea as well if you don’t drive it in the snow and mud. Had a few buddies get amazing mpg/power dyno results with both the Banks intake/scoop, especially on the track. But for daily driving, just the Banks intake should help as well. Those open cone filter intakes don’t help as much because they suck in more hot air but they sound cool.

The reason your fuel mileage is low is because your being honest about it… our duramaxs alway got less mpg compared to anybody else. :haha:

Tune and exhaust will definitely add more power, mpg will all depend on your right foot.

Gotta be super careful with who does the tune. Ask who is recommended in your area with good reviews and tunes.

Thanks for the input! I’m all about keeping it relatively quiet for long hauls. Ive been the droning loud intake and exhaust route already and it wears on ya mile after mile. It is a fair weather hauler, no salt in its future. Although that trip to Moab two years ago we ran into a snowstorm in CO.
I think your right Dean, a few people I know claim 17-18 towing 10k, but Im very skeptical on believing it. Or how much did it cost to get the mileage up to that range? Mine is factory stock and delivered 9mpg on the trip to Moab, which is about 30% better than the 99-2500-6.0 gasser delivered. And power was never an issue!

I averaged 13.5 according to trip computer this year round trip to blazer bash towing my blazer. Haven’t done math on receipts for fuel yet but it is inline with the 2-3 mpg better I have been getting since the exhaust, tune and egr delete I did while doing head gaskets . Years past a averaged between 10-11 mpg going to blazer bash.
