± What was your worst Mod made to your K5???

Putting in a sub box the size of a VW, not bolting it down, removing the rear seat, adding a plow, and hitting a hard snowbank.

Get the picture.

My worst mods all have been posted.
1406 edel broke carb (stalls on extreme angle) petersons 4 wheel off road has a good artical this month on carbs.
4" shackle flip instead of a 6" lift blocks in the rear. (articulation)
stiff 6" lift springs in the front ( what did i do with that neck brace)

thats ok you can't buy the shackle flip with a lift kit that i know of. So it will be a near future upgrade. andthe edel brock Q- jet is on the list. along with that the new mods include rs 9012 with extension brackets.

Something wicked this way rolls!

Any Holley fuel injection, I went though 3 total befor I junked them all. I run a First TPI and Electromotive DSI ECM crank trigered now.

After a uneventful reinstallation of my tranny, the carb end of the TV cable broke. Right now it's zip-tied as well as bailing wire wrapped to hold it in position. No problems so far... My passenger side mirror is missing two bolts so I zip-tied (I love those things) it to the door. Worked well till the zip-tie was cut in half by the vibration. And I have to mention my crappy magnet-mount CB antenna, biggest piece of crap...

My mom thought it would be cool to get some bigger tires for her '81 way back when I was about twelve. She went with 32" Michelins. She neglected to notice that the rear diff was 2.73. I got my license and started to can around in it while I was still trying to find my '82. A few years passed and I turned 16 andI started to get into fixing all the broken stuff on it and I checked the tranny fluid, bone dry. It had barely enough fluid in to get rolling forward. So she'd been riding around with that little amount of fluid getting really hot and having to run those 2.73s. Well needless to say the th350 only has 1st gear and reverse about 2 days after I checked it. Everything else is about shot so I'll use everything I can thats good on it for mine.

Worst mods are all recent upgrades:

1) a new GM crate 350 (not enough power - will be replacing with 454)
2) 2" lift (not enough - collecting parts for 4" lift)
3) dual front shocks (removed after less than 500 miles)

The lesson for me - develop a specific overall plan for future mods to my truck to try to avoid expensive mistakes like the above.

Detroit EZ-Locker. First, I will say I bought it to use with 31s and it worked great. I knew I needed a new case when I swapped gears. Once I added the 35s it took 2 wheeling trips to break it. The 3 hr drive home from Tellico sucked. Usually I look ahead and buy the good stuff 1st. This time I was cheep and paid for it. OTOH, when it broke I HAD to regear.

1) TPI - $1500 worth of parts sitting in my garage worth only $300-$500 to somebody else.

Propane is so simple and easy to fix on the trail- zero electronics to worry about. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Trying to run leafs, particularly in the rear. With the approach and departure angles I wanted, combined with performance for climbing, I should never have fooled with leafs... What I've spent replacing bent/broken leafs, not to mention the wasted vacations and trips, I could have had NICE coil overs and links...

Big hood scoop. At the time it was a necessity since I was running a tall carb on a spacer and the assembly did poke through the hood. Later I changed to a bigger / better carb that was shorter making the scoop obsolete but I had to keep it to cover the hole. Couldn't see for crap because of that thing. /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

Mounting a fullsize Bronco spare tire carrier on the back. Even thought I added a backing plate, the latch on the tailgate is [darn] up an otherwise good tailgate.

BTW: Holy post resurrection Batman. /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

1. Removing the CCC setup when I dropped in the 406, it'sitting in the driveway with a temp. permit because it won't pass visual smog check.

2. Boggers

id say rebuilding my 700 3 times by the wrong person.in the end having it built again.Oh and replacing the rebuildable 350 with a new crate, could have made a 383 /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

hmmm let me think... i guess that would be clocking the tcase WITH full length headers. the drive shaft rubs the collector flange now, had to lengthen the linkage, broke twice, tcase rubs floor because i didn't clearance it enough.

but don't get me wrong i love what i did, it just came with a bunch of little things that i don't like.

they are getting fixed when i lift my truck though /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

10 bolt rear axle full floater kit...including 4wpw installation. ugh. Thankfully, I'm a recovering 4x4 noob. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
