‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

Q-jet and a $40 rebuild kit?

Otherwise, i got nuthin.

I knew that would be the reply I was going to get.

...That or EFI, TBI, LS1..

This thing is made for off road. It has served me well for 6 years. I just wanted to tune it and change some gaskets.
I worked on it last night again. The secondary throttle setting was off, I put the old pump spring back in. The top end is back, but now it hesitates on the low end.

Now my timing is off and my carb needs to be set. Kind of a PITA adjusting both timing and carb setting at the same time.

I'm registered as a diesel. Smog exempt.

yeah, I was just being the token q-jet smart a$$. :D

I'd get the timing where you want it, then go back to the carb.

I assume you have this...

Yes I have that. Thanks.

So on the way to work this morning it was backfiring on the low end. Sounded retarted to me. Out of frustration I spun the dizzy as far advanced as I could get it.
It ran awesome on the low end but sputters on the top end.

Chitons says to set the timing at 7-9*. It just don't run right that retarted. I have a cam in there though.

Where do you think the timing should be?
10-12* with vacuum disconnected? :dunno:

Make sure when adjusting the timing to disconnect the vac line. I run 7 with no vac with vac you should be around 16-18

That's I tune my idle. Vac gauge.

1. Set desired idle.
2. Adjust idle air screw(s) to max vac. This should raise your idle.
3. readjust idle.
4. Timing

It worked great last time you adjusted it...:thumb:
I think the timing is about 2* too advanced then. Based on what you told me & what I feel.

I'm going to go retard it a little & check it out again.

Thanks :waytogo:

I just went out & adjusted it like you said.

I can hear the idle change when I turn the Gas/air adjusters so I went with the highest idle. Actually I went in until the idle got rough, then out until it got rough then put it right in between which was the highest idle per screw.

The timing was off the marker, >14* with the vac disconnected. :doah:

Set the timing, adjusted the carb, checked the timing. It sounds good & healthy.

Now for the test drive...

The anticipation is killing me....

The question remains. Is it still supposed to be 7* if you have an aftermarket cam?

:k5:..................$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Thanks once again Brutha! :waytogo:

My update:

It's in tune & running pretty good.

I chopped my rear fenders & rock sliders yesterday. The new tires are way bigger than my old worn out ones.

I got clever with the fender work and it turned out pretty good.

Sorry the camera battery died & I can't fin the charger. I'll post a pic later.

Now I need to get in the front axle & change the oil seal.

I'm still collecting parts for Hydro assist high steer.

Nice! :thumb:

I love this thread. :D

I'm gonna steal yer slider idea, Paul.
Implementing on Wednesday.

Thanks Mike.

Well I was wrong. I was taking the dogs down to the beach & JIMMY was running poorly again. :doah:
On the top end it slows & speeds & slow& speeds all the while my foot is planted.
I got to thinking that my harmonic balancer is giving me a wrong timing mark.

So I went down to the O'auto part's store & had a talk with them.

Remember the one I took off was 6" diameter timing mark at 12:00

Remember the replacement one was 6.5" diameter & the mark was at 11:45.

Well after researching we found one that matches the one original.
I checked the timing before I took 6.5"er off & checked again after I installed the 6"er.
It was WAY different.

Put it one the mark & it seems to drive better but well see...

Oh, yea the 6" HB that fit's my rig is for a 327. It seems that I have a stroked out, oversized cam in a 305. That explains a lot.

Sorry for the bad info I didn't think the mark was different I'm going to bring my vac gauge and dial back light to work Tomo if you want to borrow them

Thanks Supermotard

Thanks for coming by today Brutha! :waytogo:

It runs much better now.

Rant

NONE...

OK let me get this burns me up!

I hate HUMMERS. They are not made for rock crawling. There is no logical reason why someone should buy a street HUMMER and roll it out to the trail on 20's with your 10 HUMMER buddies and block the trail.
These guys are inexperienced, have NO trail manners, and always 9/10 of the Kooks break their crap and have to be towed home.
This is the 2nd time I could not hit JOHN BULL trail because of these HUMMER DORKS!

So the HUMMER DORKS are blocking the trail and there are 20 JEEP guys waiting for them. While waiting drinking a few and laughing at them, then making fun of them, and so on.

Then finally the JEEPs and make it look easy. When I got my turn I was surrounded by spectators who thought they were my spotters and insisted to give me poor advise. At one time a guy actually came up and unlocked my hub. That's about the time I snapped the axle on the other side.
DON'T TOUCH SOMEONE ELSE'S RIG UNLESS THEY GIVE YOU PERMISSION!
So I backed off the rocks and had to call it a day.

Here's a pic:
