‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

I recently heard it suggested that you should use the pitman arm from a Chevy Astro van because it points forward and will allow you more clearance between the oil pan and the drag link and tie rod. I think that was for someone with front 52s though. I'm not sure if you can clock the Astro pitman arm either. Just a thought.

Thanks for the quick reply AB, glad to see this old thing still gets a few views.

I used the [search] button. It's funny, my own thread is usually the first suggestion if I search anything so I don't usually get the best results.

(astro van)It looks like that's what K85 used on his...

I'm still not confident. One more cup of coffee....

I picked up a replacement axle shaft. Gawd I hate 10 bolts!

I have to give props to the guys at Oreilly. They kindly swapped out this cap:

For a new Ujoint at no cost to me. Under warranty. :waytogo:

So I purchased an equal amount in spray paint. I'm gonna need some body work done soon.

Spindle bearing and Hub locks also exploded. I'm not surprised.

Everything is fixed save for the hub locks, and the license plate.

I'm not going to weld the spicer caps anymore. I'm going through these faster than gas!

I'm gonna to have to change my driving style. :doah:

Sometimes people should buy Dana 60's.

How much does he have into broken 10 bolt parts? Serious question, I'm not trying to be a dick here. I just bought two of them for $1200.

nope, Ford van :waytogo: You can run the same arm, but if you don't have the high clearance crossmember you'll need the bent draglink. The Astro arm, if facing forward, would (in my mind) steer reverse of input. :dunno:

Good point Martin. I know you're not being a dick it's a legit question.

I spent $25 per axle shaft and I broke 3 so far. $75

I replaced the U joints so that's another 20 each. $40

Just got new Warn hublocks for $100

That's a few hundred too much.

Everything else could fall under "needed maintenance"

I can spend a few bucks once in a while but I can't spend several hundered on the axles. gears, and wheels, and tires.

I am the example of what not to do. I should have, and could have but I didn't.

I will upgrade eventually, hopefully my best man learns sees your wedding gift thread. :D

I'm thinking 3/4 ton set up on 15's so I can at least keep these tires.
well see...

Thanks for the info:waytogo:

Eaton makes 8 lug 15" wheels. They'll fit on a D60 - you just have to grind the calipers down so the wheels will fit over them. I'm sure you already knew that though.

Whatever you're going to do, you better do it before the kids start to arrive. It's all over after that. After I got married, I always thought that I would do one or two upgrades per year on my truck until I got it where I wanted it. That was 6 years ago. Every time I get some money together, I need it for something else. I was just about to order me a Lock Rite while ago, but then the wife e-mailed me a link to a gold watch that she wants for her anniversary present. :dunno: Oh well.

My buddy used to run 15's on his 3/4 ton with his ground hawgs, he had these rims that I swear had about 0 inches of backspacing lol. I've seen them a couple times on CL. I believe they're 15x10's. Just a thought..

I've been searching the junkyards but still haven't found a D60.

I've got the 10 bolt blues for now.

One of these days...

Register and bid. I've seen entire one ton parts trucks minus the diesel engine go for $600. Running one tons go for about $2,500.

I don't know what kind of room you have, but I have always found the cheapest way to get parts, is to buy whole trucks. Cut off the good parts, and haul the remainder in for iron. I also live on a half section of land with a few acres worth of grass, and no neighbors. I forget not everyone has that advantage.

Hmmm... non-running, complete one ton farm pickup out of some guy's field for $500, or a Dana 60 that needs rebuilding anyway for $1,000? Let's see...

Strange how the world works. :D

I found a K30 diesel on CL for $2k OBO. It had a thrown rod. Then I found out it had a D44. :doah:

I'll find a little pot of gold somewhere.

I promised the Bride to be I would rock the 10 bolts until after the wedding.

I've taken these lil axles through some tough trails. I just keep trying to climb a rock that's just out of my league.

It's name is AXLE BREAKER

Corral Canyon 011.jpg

If I just keep off that rock, I'll be fine. :D

Looks tough. I can picture the wheels starting to spin and then when the Blazer starts to climb the rock, the front driver's side hits that big boulder, stops spinning suddenly and then BANG!! There goes another shaft. That start and sudden stop will get you every time. Is there a bypass you can take until after the wedding when you get your D60 front? What am I saying? You can't wuss out like that. Maybe you could go over to the right a little, but then you would slide off the slab and get wedged up against that other rock on your passenger side. You'd between a rock and a hard place! :haha:

Dammit!!

That's not the line I keep trying!

A bypass on the trail? Yes. This is on the side of the trail. Most people just drive by or spectate.
I really think I can do this.
