Warn hub locks just got here. Keep it on the down low. I don't want this post going viral.

I need to fix / replace my steering column again.

It has a lot of play where it tilts.

That should keep me busy this weekend.

GM tilt column

The problem I am having with my tilt column is that it moves in all directions right where it tilts. Up, down, left, right.
I replaced the entire column a few years ago and now this one is doing the same thing as the other one did.
There are a lot of vibrations here.

Should I try to rebuild this or just swap it out again? Do you think maybe there is something down there that just vibrated loose?

I'm studying the Chiltons manual and don't really see a nut at the tilt area.I'm thinking maybe the thrust cup is worn out.

Anyone an expert on the subject?

Your steering column tint screws are loose,a very common problem with that style gm steering column. You will just have to tear down the column and tighten them up.
It's not a hard process, just time consuming and you will need a couple of special tools.
A steering wheel puller, steering column compresser and and a tilt pin puller. All these tools can be had cheap from your local auto parts store .
Just go slow and keep track of all the little pieces and you will be fine:waytogo:

Thanks.
I've been as far down as the ignition tumbler w/o any special tools.

I'll go get the tools to make it easier. I think I can handle it.

I just searched 3 junkyards and couldn't find a match. So that's just what I'll do.

Yeah, I always laugh when people replace worn tilt columns instead of fixing them. After you buy the tool kit (it can be done without it, but is SO simple with it), and repair it, you'll see what I mean.

Mine bolts get loose every couple of years seems like. I think it's because I always turn it all the way to the left and lock it. Then when I go to start it again, I have to pull hard on the wheel to unlock it. I think that makes the bolts loosen up over time.

I've replaced it once before and it was a real pain. I would much rather take the top half apart and tighten it up.

Those thing's are getting hard to find. Especially the later ones ('84 and up) with the headlight dimmer and cruise control on the stalk. You should always hang on to stuff like that. Shame on you. :shame:

I saw a few of those. My dimmer is on the floor.

I have tilt, cruise control, and 4 speed shifter.

...shame on me indeed.
