‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

We are up in San Fran for our engagement party. We just made the most expensive investment ever.

We put down $7K deposit on the resort in Meheko for our wedding.

It's going to be epic.

Awesome man! Sounds like a good time :waytogo:

The party was a blast they hung these paper globes that have LED lights in them. When it got dark they looked like full moons. There were 70 of them thru out the back yard. It was kewl.

I'm thinking about low budget upgrades for the front axle.:D

Search Craigslist for Dana 60's? I found a Dodge set of Dana 60's for $500 today, a Chevrolet DRW Dana for $550, and a couple other reasonably priced ones.

All depends on your location. Also, that DRW front is only worth it at that price if you have hubs, can get hubs/rotors cheap, is already completely rebuilt, or you're running H1 rims. New hubs/rotors are going to run $350-$400

I know several people with lathes that I can use. I don't know if that applies to the OP.

Yeah I would just plan on ditching the front 10 bolt. Don't you already have chromo shafts and crossover steering? I guess you could get stronger u-joints and maybe weld some bracing and gussets on the tube to streghthen it up a little. There's heavy duty tie rods you can buy or make, but didn't you already do that too? Maybe I'm thinking of someone else. A Loc-Rite in the front would make sense if you still have an open diff. Don't forget Warn Premium hubs. I've also seen some (supposedly) stronger and better hub nuts out there that aren't supposed to be able to work themselves loose like the stock ones seem to want to do. Can't remember right now who makes them though.

I haven't ever heard of anyone doing this, but I know that the later model 10 bolt rear axles had 30 spline shafts instead of the 28 spline shafts that your axle has. I don't know if there were ever any 30 spline front axles, but swapping to that would give you a little more strength. Maybe.

Overall, I haven't been very impressed with the 10 bolt axles for anything too much bigger than stock tires. I know you said that you want to try to keep your current 35" BFGs because they're close to new, but I bet you could sell them and the wheels on Craig's List for a fair price. Then you could use that money towards swapping to one ton axles front and rear and never look back. Then you could go out to the Axlebreaker Trail and drive right up that big bad hill and then turn around and do it again. :D Although going down it would be pretty scary too.

Thanks guys. I just pooped all over the beast's thread with dumb ideas trying to entertain the masses.:D

I am currently running the 10 bolt with junk yard shafts, and a lockrite w/ stock steering, oh yea and brand new Warn hubs.

The plan is still to buy Supermotard750s Dana44 when he's done with the 13BFF front steer axle. It has high steer hydro assist all set up.

I have the box tapped, an xj shaft, an xj pitman arm, a tapered tool, and a beer can stove.

I need to get some fittings, a ram, steering arms, and a drag link.

This has to be on the cheap.

I want high steer but I am thinking about the NorCalchris cross over for now.

Any thoughts?

My search skills suck right now. I was looking for good read threads and I couldn't find them.

NorCal_Chris locked the old Blazer thread. I think he took his stock drag link and put it in the tube bender and made his own cross over drag link. It was so simple it was genus.

DirtyGoat has a THREAD for full hydro on the cheap with some nice fittings.

If I get the ram for the 10 bolt it would have to be 6" stroke, not 8".

When are you going to finish that 13 bolt? Need me to come haul it off yet?
