‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

I think the sky arms are 1 1/2" taller to clear. And they are solid so no spacers and they use the factory style cone washers so they are very strong. I've never had a problem with them. And using the straight links keep things very clean looking an very easy to adjust.

Supermoto - So basically you just got a steering box off a 2wd Chevy, two stock draglinks, a flat-top passenger side knuckle (drilled and tapped) and that Sky steering arm and that's all you needed to make your crossover steering work? What about the rod ends and stuff like that?

I guess you would also need a steering arm for the driver's side too.

Well I used 1.5" Dom to make my tie rod and drag link but I'm using the factory Tie rod ends so its a part store part. But other wise you got it

Project Soft Top

So I was picking thru my buddy garbage and found an old soft top, no frame.

Remember Specialty Top Company from Denver Co? :dunno:

Neither do I. :D

I took it as a challenge, an interesting project at least.

So first I laid it out on the hard top to get a feel for it and maybe take some rough measurements.

Here it is:

I think I like the looks of it. The side windows are removable.

The rear window rolls up.

Safety cone peaking out.

Did I mention the rear window rolls up?

Pretty sweet score Paul!!

Can you stretch it out any more? Just looks a bit loose:dunno:

The edge of the top has this plastic channel. I need to find its mate and mount it to the rig.
Some sort of J channel trim is needed.

Then I went and got some electrical conduit and started bending tube. I quickly realized this 3/4" conduit was too small and went to the 1" but you get the idea.

If anybody knows where to get Specialty Top Company hardware let me know. I could use some trim.

I think that's going to look just right on there when you get through. I would post in the wanted to buy board if you haven't already. Some of these old timers might still be hanging on to some old hardware. Who knows? It would help if you could find an old catalog or look at some pics on the internet of all the details of how it was mounted. Maybe that company got bought out by another one that can still supply you with what you need. Google time!

Speciality Top Company Out of Buisness

The funny thing is my google search lead me here. :D

I think I'll just use Junkyard ingenuity and get er done with whatever I can find. I have a few ideas.

Along with the soft top I want to get a nice GMC truck tailgate and ditch the power window tailgate.

The Hard top and tailgate together must weigh close to 400lbs. :dunno:

That fits in the put your truck on a diet regimen. :pimp:

Yes sir. I'm looking for a GMC one.

Last time I was at the JY I saw one that was in good condition but it had brand new damage from a forklift. :doah:

Next 1/2 off sale is Memorial Day Monday.

I'm thinking 14 bolt time.

I just sold my STC top and hardware a couple of months ago....I might have some close ups of the cab, bedrail and tailgate trim somewhere

If you can find the pics please post em here.

I'm going to go down to the marina and look for boat soft top hardware.

I got this trim and some 1" electrical conduit from the local home improvement center.

Project soft top 007.jpg
Took the trail gear out of the back, grabbed the impact and removed the bolts on the hard top.

Project soft top 008.jpg
I removed this heavy bastard all by my self.

Project soft top 009.jpg
Installed a mounting clip on the bed rail.

Project soft top 010.jpg
I rolled that trim around the body.

Soft top installation

Project soft top 011.jpg
I installed the trim up and over the cab,I cut the bottom of the vertical piece later so the little trim pieces made a corner.

Project soft top 012.jpg
Installed stabilizer rods.

Project soft top 013.jpg
They hold the front tube in place.

Project soft top 014.jpg
It's starting to take shape.

Project soft top 015.jpg
A little safety tape and a strong back to hold the rear bar while I measure about 100 times.
