‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

View attachment 232938 Thanks. It is really good.

I have 21lbs of grain in a 5 gallon batch. It's a hybrid Marris otter/ US 2 row.

I hopped it with cluster, centennial, and horizon.

Pitched with London Ale & backed up with US05

OG 1.070
FG 1.011

ABV 7.74%

London is my go to on stouts as well. I usually make a lighter stout, only 15lbs, with chinook, and fugles. Marris otter is my go to 2 row.

I got the driver side dash mostly back in.
Unfortunately I spent way too much time looking for a short that was just a loose ground.

I went wheelin!

The wife insisted so I couldn't say no.

It's been a while, way too long.

Not much picks because it was wet and sloppy and I hate mud.

Here we are ready to go.

As soon as we got to the OHV it started raining. The wife insisted so we unloaded in the rain and went muddy rock crawling.

IMG_8542.JPG
I climbed down to an area and couldn't find a good way out so I had to climb back up the way I went down.
Did I mention I hate mud?

I found that I really don't like wheelin with my son in the back.
He loved it though. He was sleeping thru the roughest parts.
But when it came down to it I wasn't making a line and the wife got out with the kid which let me get a little more agro & I made it.
So there are things I can do but won't when he's in there.

I don't know, new parenting thing.
I guess I'm going to have to be mellow for a while.

My 19 month old has been going for a while. Nothing too rough just trails. All my kids have been on four wheelers since they were tiny in one of those backpack things. Just gotta not bounce there little melons around too much. First one will scare you since you are new to kids, by the fourth you're like "eh they'll be fine".

The wheelin gods were kind.

I hauled up to Dunefest 2017 and met a ton of awesome people.

I had a few stalling issues on the drive out. It was raining so I believe I took a little water in or something.
It cleared itself out after a while.

I had a blast in the dunes. Here's a few poser shots incase you missed the main feed.

I got a little silly and caught some air. My little bump stops we're useless and I snapped my ram assist fittings.

Playing around in a little brush area.

Again, I got a little silly at the deep water crossing and waterlogged my carb and dizzy.
Also I shorted out my primary circuit on my electric fan.

IMG_8702.JPG

Some carnage.

All 4 bolts were loose on the tranny adapter.
I had some replacement bolts in the garage and some loc-tight so easy fix. IMG_8719.JPG

Jimmy flexes pretty good.

I found an extra set of fitting in the garage while I was searching for the loc-tight.
So score! Another easy fix.

I forgot to turn off the fan during the water crossing. It was just a simple bus fuse in the water tight relay box. The secondary circuit worked just as planned so I wasn't left without a fan. Another Easy fix. IMG_8797.JPG View attachment 240228

The wheelin gods were kind indeed.

So I got the JIMMY cobbled back together to its previous state.
A few easy fixes and now I know what I want to change to make improvements.

I picked up a few offset TRE's to correct my steering clearance issues.IMG_8838.JPG

I chopped off all my ram mounts so I can make a new set up.

IMG_8839.JPG

With the new offset TRE's in place i have more clearance between the pitman arm and tie rod.
IMG_8840.JPG

Next I'm going to find a better location for the ram and build new mounts.

yeah, I'm surprised I don't see more offset tierod ends. I use those to to clear the diff cover also.

I thought I would need them, turns out I clear the ruffstuff cover fine. They also bend easier than the straight ones....

Agree then bent easier, but Ive only had 1 bend a little on me in 5 years and it was still useable. I didnt swap it out till the other side was warn out too. I have a new pair that has lasted a long time and I carry a couple straight ones as a spares.

I cant remember what my diff is.

My 1" 3/4 tierod clears my DIY cover turning the one way but not the other so much.

Some covers just must increase the capacity as well as brute strength.

I'm carrying the slightly bent offsets as spares now

and tie-rod diameter.

I got the idea from your build.
Thanks for that.
I'm running high steer so instead of offsetting them out for the diff cover I went in to clear the junkyard XJ pitman arm.

That's Beef!
I'm just running stock junkyard tie rod's chopped a little shorter for the high steer and welded back together.

Good stuff. Glad it was easy fixes.

Bump stops next.

:D

I was looking at some Bilstein bump stops for the front but I can't find a good mount for it. I was looking for your feedback on maybe a universal style one or maybe some custom work....

How much thicker does ya need over 1 3/4? 2in?

This is 3/8 thick, that's pretty stout.

That's what she said!!
