‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

I was looking at some Bilstein bump stops for the front but I can't find a good mount for it. I was looking for your feedback on maybe a universal style one or maybe some custom work....

As in air bumps?

I can make you up some brackets to fit the frame, maybe ill make them a little long and you can trim to fit for your ride height etc.

Bilstien uses weird sizes don't they. There are plenty of others out there for cheaper. Profender is on of them.

Bump stop stuff.

I was looking at these.

Some of the other brands include a sleeve to mount it. I called Bilstein and they do not offer one. I would have to get a universal one and make metal magic.

I'm not sure where to get the mounting sleeve. I'll have to browse the interwebs or call one of my favorite suppliers for that.
Unless you's guys already know...

You can get a 2" air bump can from lots of places.

You just need the pinch style ones, and not the king solid tube ones.

Also what is the price on those?

I got 2 of my fox 2.0s from ORW for like $320 shipped a few years back.

I had to call and chat with the guy to get that price. They were like $175ea on the website.

Always call and ask what they can do for you, because they can normally beat the website price if you try...

The 2" poly performance cans with 2 pinch bolts are $30 each

2"or 3" travel air bumps from Bilstein run $186 each.

This plus a few pieces of scrap metal should be a good start.

I cleaned up my tabs for reuse.IMG_8894.JPG
I've always been annoyed about the way the heim joint on the ram was clocked so I chopped it off.

I decided to hide my ram behind the tie rod.

This is a soft mock up of where I want it.

Vertically there is 6" clearance up before things get smashy.

Driver side view shows the improved clearance to the pitman arm using the offset TRE's.
I kept the ram parallel at 2.5" back from the tie rod.
In line with the U bolts and at the same height.

I did some grinder work and reused the old mounts.

Blue sharpie pic FTW.

I Set my toe in and centered everything up and tacked it in place.

In the alley in my neighborhood I found a spot where I could stretch it out.

No bashing and no touching, everything seems good here.

...and I stuffed it too just to be safe.

Next up I need to service my tranny/ tcase, it's still leaking fluid all over my cardboard floor.
Also I still need to do 2 more cage tie-ins as well.

and then...

I ordered the cans to mount some bump stops.

I'll be honest, it would make me uncomfortable with those hoses hanging out front. I'd be worried they would get hooked on something, then pulled off.

Thanks for the feedback Greg.
Remember the hoses and ram are way above the old stock location of the steering stabilizer and still above the axle tube.

I have some smaller, less bulky fittings I can use and I still have options for various angles with the swivel fittings.
I was thinking about rerouting the hoses to a shorter path with more flex.

We'll see how it goes.

I liked the way this setup felt so I burned it in.

Here's the smaller, less bulky fitting next to the original beefaroni one.

I tried turning the ram 180* and routing the hoses to the back but it reduced my clearance by and inch so I decided to keep them up front.

I'm not too concerned about bashing the fittings, I think they are up out of the way.

I don't like this tie rod on the pitman arm. The boot is already worn and it seems to have too much play. I fix that soon.

And then....
IMG_8979.JPG

Yea so I went down to the car wash and cleaned off all the leaky fluid stuff.

And then...

I did a few high speed passes (sorry no video but was awesome AF) in my neighborhood wash. The new setup is Tits McGee.

Paul, I know you probably don't want to.... But just flexing the rig isn't the best way to test the bumps. The axle will not go up the same distance in the center as it will out on the end when you flex it, and the only real way to make sure it all clears is to break down the springs and cycle the static travel...

It's a pain in the ass, but like when @jekquistk5 rode with me in the dunes and we smashed the bumps hard on a quick incline, nothing bottoms out and I know it won't.

Just my 2 cents duder.
