chris85 submitted a new Build:

89 Jimmy "Dylan's First ride"

So I figured I'd get another build thread started

Chapter 1

This is my 89 GMC jimmy. It has been in my family since brand new. Starting its life out in Idaho Falls, ID. My aunt bought it in 89, when I was 4 years old, and I can still remember riding around in this thing and LOVING it! I have always wanted this thing or one of my own and I knew I'd get one eventually. My aunt passed away in 94' and my uncle kept it for quite a while longer. When he decided to sell it my grandparents picked it up from him until they just got too old to drive it. When they were getting ready to sell it I was just finishing up nursing school. We worked it out that if I just got it shipped from Idaho to Mississippi that I could have it, $1600 later it was mine!!!

So now I have a 89, super clean interior, 82k on the odometer, ran good, rode good, just some peeling and paint and slight rust from its Idaho winters.

Well for about the next 5 years I just fixed things here and there, ran it through some mud holes like an idiot, and just kept it running but never had anywhere to do any real mods. I knew once I had a place to work on it I was going to do everything i had always wanted. I picked up some tons that I just hung onto forever, just waiting to get the ball rolling. At this point I was heading off to Nurse anesthetist school and it just sat at my parents for about 3 years.

So fast forward to the end of Anesthesia school. May 2015: I'm engaged, have a wedding this month, buying our first house this month, studying to take my board certification, take my boards exam, bachelors trip and finally honeymoon, THEN start my first anesthesia job June 1.

Oct 2015: Finally decide to go get this thing and move it to my house 30 miles away from my parents. New battery and some starter fluid and she fired right up. I get it home that day and my wife says she has a present for me for the jimmy. See below.

Well sh*t!

Stay tuned for chapter 2.

Chapter 2

Excited but definitely surprised. I was not expecting a baby so early but the build goes on.

Plans:
6.0 lq4
4l80e
D60 4:56
14b 4:56 with Detroit
ORD 6inch front springs
DIY Shackle flip
3 inch tuff country rear springs
DIY crossover steering with hydro assist
All kinds of other goodies

I regret that I didn't get any good before pics, but it's time sitting he taken a toll. The existing rust had gone unchecked and ate some holes in the rockers and bed step down.

Disassembly:

Time to discuss goals.

Simple, an over built family camp and play rig that we can take all over. I do have Moab and the rubicon on the bucket list. Upgrades to the current build plan will be needed (front locker, cage, sliders) but for the time being I just want it up and running.

I contemplated calling this the "paint by numbers" build because everything I plan to do to it I have seen done here. You'll probably notice a lot of inspiration from K30blazer's truckasaurus. That thing is awesome, and he built it with the end goal as mine, family fun rig.

I know I've been pretty long winded on the backstory and such, but I've been dreaming about this thing for about 25 years!

I used some Eastwood rust converter, once I ran out I started using Ospho. Then covered it up with Eastwood rust encapsulator, then brushed Al's liner over that. That took a loooong time to do haha!

That encapsulator is pretty good stuff. It looked a lot cleaner before I put the Al's on, but I wanted as much protection as I could get.

Chapter 3

Now we get into the name of the build. May 21, 2016 Dylan Kaylynn is born. And from this day on whenever I want to work on the truck I tell my wife I'm going to work on Dylan's first car :D You can't argue with that haha.

Shoot I've got four little boys, I better tell the wife I need a few more projects er I mean "first cars" for them.

Turning out really awesome. What are you using to clean the interior frame? I keep forgetting most people dont' have to deal with salt/rust like me.

Same stuff basically. Grind off the rust and treat it with the ospho, repeat as necessary and clean with acetone or pre paint cleaner in between steps. That is a coat of the rust encapsulator. I'm gonna go back over it with some Eastwood extreme chassis black.

The frame is solid but my OCD wouldn't allow me to put new, clean parts on a dirty, rusty frame :haha:

Pretty big day today. Got a coat of extreme chassis black sprayed. Picked up the 14 bolt and got the drums off for discs conversion. It's going to get cleaned up and painted tomorrow. Also, should be getting new body mounts in and front suspension off. New front is ready to go in this weekend! Hopefully I can at least get the rear suspension off by this weekend. Oh and a early Father's Day present! :D:D

I e been eyeing the fuel version. 700lbft of torque :saweet:

I have the fuel stuff for work. Love them all. The 1/2" is real handy when I don't want to start my compressor and get out air hose.

Pops and I did a lot of work today. Body is back on the frame. New poly mounts are in. Got the front end out. We're kind of in a stand still now. I didnt read the FUSH instructions before starting and didn't have anything to enlarge the shackle hole. :dunno: Whoops.

The fuel stuff worked awesome today. Love this thing!

I need some opinions.

I've been drooling over the magnum box and I have a line on a 205 TC out of a 79. It's been rebuilt before and they're asking for $250. I'm sure I could get it cheaper. If I get this I'm definitely going to want to do a magnum box too. That adds an extra 2k to my build .

My original plan was to just SYE my 241 and go. I have to swap in a 32 spline input shaft for the 4l80, so I'm looking at about $600 to get the TC done.

Hmm decisions decisions.
