“Dylan’s” 89. Back at it!

So if anyone plans to take on some paint stripping/rust removal @83ChevyK5Blazer i would highly recommend picking up one of these.

https://www.eastwood.com/4-1-2in-cleaning-stripping-disc-system.html

The black disc makes easy work of paint and primer, rust takes a little more time but it’ll get it.

I probably just had cheap sandpaper but I went through about 3 sheets of 80 grit on the DA and probably didn’t even get a 1/3 of the roof done.

Benchmark abrasives has a better stripping disk then that. And yes they work extremely well.

This is frustrating. It’s mostly my fault bc I’m sick of messing with and I’m ready to get done so I’m rushing a bit. But it’s looking good. It’s got a few runs and bugs and smudges from the hose but it’ll do.

I’m not going for looks all that much as I am protection. I’m using epoxy primer and a commercial grade single stage. I just told the paint store people I wanted the strongest stuff they had (except for Imron, too expensive).

Tomorrow I’ll shoot the paint and call it good.

Shoot man, it looks good. Are you going to try and sand the bugs etc?

Besides, you wont see any of that when its covered in mud. :D

Heck no! If they don’t wipe off with a rag then them suckers are there to stay! The good thing about the paint itself is it can go direct to metal, so I may trip to just wipe some stuff out with some solvent. We’ll see how I feel tomorrow.

I am ready to get to that stage , as I just ordered my paint. I’ll be shooting in my shop. Lots of plastic, some cheap box fans and some osb to cover the door and mount fans with furnace filters. I have done the paint in the driveway it it’s just too many bugs. I’m with you on just getting it all one color and not being perfect. Two more cage bars then I can pull and start prepping interior for bed liner, then paint. What gun are you using?

I bought the Eastwood Concours LT. It’s designed for use with a lower cfm requirement. The gun has sprayed awesome! I have no experience with any HVLP guns but I feel like it made up some for my lack of skill. Easy to lay down, nice and even spray. My only run spots came from times when I would try to change my body position but didn’t let go of the trigger, and a few times the canopy interfered with were I needed to position the gun.

I’ve used a lot of Eastwood products on this build, mainly because I didn’t know anything about what was out there. Eastwood puts out a lot of “how-to’s” and other info so that is pretty much why I used their stuff. That said I have had real good results with everything I’ve bought from them. I hear some say they’re pricey but like I said, I didn’t know any better.

I just hate having to order stuff and wait.

I take it back. Don’t try this bullshit. Work overtime and pay someone. Wind just picked up and blew shit all over it and destroyed the canopy which did nothing but cause problems from the start.

Any thing that can be sanded out?

Yeah it all can but it won’t happen anytime soon.

I have some left over paint so I can fix it later. I’m just pissed. Put so much effort into making it look at least decent and one gust of wind and a bunch of f$@k bugs had to screw it up. I knew it wasn’t going to be perfect but....you know. We all have a certain level of imperfection that is acceptable but this did not meet that standard. It would have! It was coming out great, beyond expectations, but poor planning/poor execution/bad luck/ whatever happened.

Man, I'm sorry to hear it got screwed up in the edit but man it looks good! Great update to find when I got back from lunch! Give it some time, cool off about it and maybe it'll be something you can sand / buff out.

Seriously though, where are you in the build now? It runs, you have driveshafts, tires and wheels. Now it's painted. Are you close to test drives and/or driving it to work?

I have A drive shaft. Need a front. I’m waiting till I can take it on the road to find a place to flex out and measure for shocks and the shaft.

Next up is an exhaust and a tune. I don’t have time off again to get that done until June so in the mean time I’ll get the interior coated and all back together.

I still can’t get the rear brakes to bleed and work. I finally bought the little bleeder tool so maybe that will fix the problem.

Electric fans have never turned on either so I need to chase that down. I know the fans work so it is probably a relay or something in the ecm.

Get the ac pressure tested and charge. Low on the priorities.

I do want to get hydraulic assist and a spartan in the front before Sept but it’s not a necessity.

Then just tidy up a bit and should be good to go. Not a ton left to do but my weekends are pretty booked up for awhile and it’s hard to get anything done during the week.
