“Dylan’s” 89. Back at it!

89 Jimmy 6.0/4l80e/MAGNUM 205/d60/14bolt
Just a short one in the neighborhood, wanted to check for leaks since it’s the first time it’s been up to temp for a period of time. Need to do a quick alignment today and I may take it out this evening.

Also had a weird little issue with the trans. Every now and then when I would shift into Park there would be a real quick sharp “grind” noise. Then yesterday I was trying to crawl my steep driveway and it would not go into neutral. Linkage would move but the trans would not shift. Turned it off, put it in park, started it back up and all was fine.

Didn’t check to see if linkage was loose or anything so who know. Waiting in my trans guy to call back just to see what this is all about. Always something.

I do know that the linkage does hit the exhaust a tiny bit so I may go bang some clearance into it today.

Sounds like a linkage. My 700r4 did that till I put a cable shifter on.

How are your motor mounts? Maybe you already covered this and I missed it but with the linkage going from the column to the engine if the motor mounts are old it can cause issues. I've had it manually downshift before while wheeling because my motor mounts were shot and the engine would move but the column linkage wouldn't.

That works too, but when you need the center seat in the bench then new poly motor mount inserts work just fine for 14 years now. :waytogo:

Brand new poly bushings in a TNA crossmember. I did the linkage this way to avoid the frame flex from causing those same type of problems. I’m hoping the adjustment took care of it. Haven’t been able to test it out just yet

Ok, so apparently the trans has to be in park in order to shift the magnum. I’m not sure what happens but if it’s in neutral the trans won’t engage any gear and when you shift park it grinds the park pawl. BUT, as long as it’s in park when you shift the magnum then everything works fine. Which is kind of a pain cause to shift the 205 it has to be in neutral. Oh well, one price to pay for awesomeness.

The shifting issue sounds like a trans linkage adjustment.

Well the 205 is fine with neutral or park. Should be the same for the magnum

I called ORD and the guy that rebuilt the trans about this and neither really had an answer.

When the trans is in neutral, the magnum kind of feels like it doesn’t engage all the way into low, but when you try to shift back it grinds in the TC. But, in park you can shift the magnum freely and it engages fine.

The 205 shift easily in neutral but it’s much harder to shift when it’s in Park.

The things that baffles me is that when I try the trans in Neutral and the magnum is in low then the trans won’t engage any other gear. It’s just dead in the water. It will go into park but it grinds the park pawl when you do this. At this point you have to shut it off and put it in park and and start back up then everything works.

Mind you, this is a 2wd 4l80e so all the VSS and stuff is in the trans, so it basically doesn’t even know there is a TC behind it.

Normally if I have the transfer case in neutral and I try to put it in park it will do that and I think it is because there is no way to stop the transmission from turning, when the tcase is engaged you press on the brakes and it stops the transmission and it can smoothly go in park.
The other issues have to be alignment issues.
It will take some fine tuning but I think they will get better.
Did you try shifting the magnum while in neutral and holding the brakes?

I have a magnum and 205 also. Difference with mine is I have a manual trans. Most gears need to be turning to shift/engage. But not turning to fast or it will grind. Sometimes I can shift my 205 sitting still, sometimes not. It depends where the gears are sitting. My magnum same thing. What I found works best is to to shift when I’m barely rolling. And like Iceman said, with the auto, if you have a neutral condition after the trans, you have to shut it off to put it back in park. Luckily I can just push in the clutch and give it a sec to spool down.
When I had my auto and 208, I would be barely rolling and slip the trans in neutral and shift the tcase quickly. Then back into gear. Works really well once you get the feel for it.

I’ll have to play around with that. It may just need some breaking in I guess.

Well it goes down the road ok. Leaking like crazy though. :surepal: Kind of expected this

My old rig leaked like crazy. I spent the extra time cleaning gaskets and making sure mating surfaces were prepped and dry before I assembled. Sometimes taking your time pays off.

Yeah I thought I did that pretty well but apparently not. I think most of it was coming out of vent lines.

How much fluid did you put in the magnum? I had fluid coming out of its vent. Same for the transmission, which my trans guy says is overfilled, but all the literature I found on fluid capacity said a 4l80e takes 14 quarts. I know, alot. But i also know it doesn’t have that much in there.
