hey guys, my friends picking up an 01 dodge 2500 gasser and i told him manual hubs r a good upgrade to have, and he really wants them because its a fail proof way to have 4x4 cause the vacuum will fail at some point and at the wrong time. but all the kits i can find r only with upgraded 35spline stub shafts. and thats a lot of $$ he doesnt need to spend (only gonna run 35s). do they make kits with just the spindle/hub/locking hubs?

AFAIK that truck should have unit bearings with full time hubs. Converting that to manual hubs is over $1K IIRC.

I sure as hell wouldn't bother changing any of that, its a fairly good setup from the factory.

ya it is. i saw on dynatrac's site it has a spindle that bolts onto where the hub unit originally went to then after that its just like our D60s. but i cant find a kit without upgraded stub shafts and stuff he doesnt need...just seems odd to me that they wouldnt have a cheaper kit that accepts the stock stub shafts. maybe its a length issue with the stock stub shafts....im glad i dont have stud shaft length issues:whistle:

The unit bearing dodge knuckles are different and would need to be changed as well.

well not really, i just suggested it, because ive seen vacuum fail a lot. we also thought that it would be A LOT cheaper then what we're seeing.

I thought the newer Dodges used full time hubs?

I swear my '99 2500 Cummins has full time hubs and unit bearings.

Part time "auto" hubs were a stupid idea and the manufacturers ditched them on solid axle trucks in the early 90's. At least, that's what I thought :wink1:

ur probably right. i just listened to him when he said they're vacuum cuz i dont know dodges at all. but then again he doesnt know much about them either...soooo im gonna say ur correct. ill let him know that he wasted my time and everyone elses on here....what a jerk:wink1: but thanks for clearing it up!

the kit bolts on to unit bearing location on stock knuckles. and you need every thing thay sell in the kit as the stub shafts are threaded to hold unit bearing all together. and its a decent kit. i have seen one and worked on it a bit.

and if you have vac/disconect system lockouts wouldnt eliminate the 2 peice shaft. check his truck for the system as thay started ditching it around that time.

if you want the vac disconect gone get a posi locker cable conversion kit. under 200 bucks avarage price and 1 hr install basicly.

ya, ill check just to be 100% sure on that and if the stick on the floor is a fake one and isnt actually controlling the t case, im sure he'll get the posi locker cable.

This era of Dodge has no "hubs" at all as the stub shafts are splined right into the unit bearing assemblies. They have a vacuum disconnect axle shaft on the long side that engages the 2 piece shaft when you shift it into 4wd.

The "stick on the floor" is definitely not "fake", as it is still a mechanical linkage that shifts the t-case into 4 high and 4 low just like any other older 4x4, but without locking in the vacuum disconnect you won't have 4wd just like if you did not lock in the locking hubs (well, unless you have a locker in the front and you would have 3 wheel drive since the vacuum disconnect only unlocks one side).

The locking hub conversion kit requires new stubs no matter what as the stock ones won't work, so whether they are 35-spline or not is a moot point.

oooo ok, thanks for clearing that up. i guess ill let him know...and he'll probably end up just getting the cable to get the vacuum off of there, thanks again!
