Trying to help this lady out, Truck intermittently wont start first crank. Usually happens after sitting atleast a couple hours. Says she cranks it a couple seconds then lets of and will usualy start in a couple tries.

I have had the truck several times, but it just wont screw up for me. by her description, I threw a fuel pump at it, but it did it again today.

Any common failures with these trucks? I know it will eventually do it for me, but it is pretty inconvenient for her to leave the truck with me.

Check to see if fuel pressure bleeds down. Or take vac hose off the fuel pressure regulator and see if there is fuel in it. If fuel in vac hose replace regulator.

If bleeds down and regulator good bad pump

My money is on regulator. Pull the vac line off the regulator on the i believe left hand middle of fuel rail and see if it has fuel in it

I have checked for fuel in the vac hose several times, never find any. Each time I have had the truck, I have had my fuel pressure gauge on it the whole time with no pressure drop.

does this bodystyle have ignition switch issues?

Dammit...in the years ive been mechanicing i have not seen an ignition switch go in one. Thats not saying anything though. Does it seem to only do it after a hot soak? Does it start first time after sitting over night?

usually first start of the day, but sometimes after sitting a couple hours. Never a problem when the motor is still warm at all.

I dont....i was hoping you were closer i coulda took a quick look. It really sounds fuel related. How many miles are on the truck?

140k...the problem is I cant ever get it to act up. She has left it overnight with me (parked in the shop at same temp as her garage) and it always starts perfectly.

It is one of those deals, where she just cant do without her car, so I get it overnight and she picks it up in the morning. I usually dont feel bad or obligated when they wont figure out a way to leave a car with me till I can figure it out, but I do now that I have thrown a pump in it with no results.

Well...it might be something to check but my 6.0 was a hard start cold when i first got it at 140k.... pulled plugs and my gapper wasnt even big enough to read them. Threw in new plugs and it was fixed. Wasnt a terrible hard start though. Im assuming no codes? Not a security issue?

I know someone who chased a similar problem for weeks and replaced many parts with no results...he had one mechanic suggest he replace the oil sending unit,I guess on his truck its tied in with the electric fuel pump wiring, and it hasn't acted up since...he was told by a GM dealer there was a defect in the "5 second prime circuit" in the pump wiring, but he couldn't find anything wrong there...

sounds like the same problem ive been chasing with my silverado it will get streaks where it will start first try then other times where it take 2 or 3 tries thing I cant wrap my head around with this problem is if it aint gonna fire right away you can keep cranking on the key and it wont even fire let off as soon as I hit the key again fires right up. Ive just recenly heard about what diesel4me just mentioned Gonna be looking into that one of these weekends until then ive had this problem for the last couple years runs awsome and has never left me stranded.
