03 gmc duramax with 350k (BBT) transmission fun

So, I never got around to updating this after fixing the leak, mostly because the leak is still there. :( Maybe it's coming from the rear main or something.

Anyway, it's still doing it's job of towing around the more fun stuff. I did get a cool shot of it at night down in goblin valley this last weekend though.

Well, I never did hit 400k. Got real close, but decided it was time for an upgrade so I sold BBT. I bought it for 6k and sold it for 9.5k after a lot of miles. Only thing i added was a gooseneck ball and stereo.
Truck did good for me.

This is the new rig at a trip to white sands.

Hopefully this one treats me as well as the last.

What moron paid you $9500 for a truck with almost 400k miles on it?

This truck market has got so out of control it’s ridiculous. I put most of the blame on Kelly Blue Book

Pre-emissions diesel is the main selling point when we get them into the dealership. I know we've had similar trucks by age with 200k that we've sold for 18-20k. Usually, we got guys fighting for them.

Between diesel exhaust aftertreatment systems, DEF, EGR, and the crap that goes along with it folks are willing to pay a premium for a diesel truck that never had that stuff to begin with. Combine that with a serious lack of new truck availability and you got a recipe for inflated used diesel truck pricing.

Exactly what Zoo said. Hell, I sold a '95 K2500 with a 350 and 250K on it for $2700 in 2 days. The guy said that he couldn't find a cheap truck for yard work for less than $10K.
Everything is getting stupid expensive. I guarantee that I could sell my gasser '01 K2500 for over $10K with what I have done to it. Good deals are getting difficult to find. Marketplace has helped push prices up because they want instantaneous satisfaction of a new purchase.
I am constantly shocked.

I agree with everything you guys have mentioned. I mentioned KBB cause I think their algorithms are complete crap. They base their prices, in part, based off new truck prices. But in today’s world that’s comparing apples to oranges, mainly cause most of all new trucks have so many little electronic widgets on the interior (part of the reason why new trucks are getting more expensive too...cause the average idiot thinks you need things like rear view mirror heaters and voice command cell phone blue tooth functions) that were not even an option on the trucks in the early 2000’s. But all the stupid used car dealers use KBB as their primary value source not thinking about any of this. And couple that with what has been said above (and add a splash of idiotic consumer spending habits), and you get what we’re experiencing with the used truck market today. So dumb

After taking my gas 6.0 over the rockies pulling the Maiden, Im glad you didnt go with a gasser a few years ago, my 06 LLY was a night and day difference in getting the job done!
Nice GMC Josh!
Maybe its time to dump my 99 2500 then? (The white one)
250k on it, most everything works well on it, and good maint. records on it.
whats its value?

Value probably depends on the area you're in, but new trucks are hard to get right now, so it's probably pretty good.

One thing to keep in mind is just how much they've improved the duramax over the years. My 2017 has 450 more torque than my 2003, which is insane imo.

Your right Josh. I wasnt fully onboard the Diesel train until I bought my 06. The difference towing to Moab between the 99-6.0 gas and the 06 Duramax for me is an unbelievable game changer. Going across the Rockies on I70 was never a power issue, although I was concerned about temps a couple times in the 80+* weather. I’m more impressed with this truck the more I drive it, but I haven't been in the drivers seat of a 900+ torque truck yet. Probably best if I dont!

The earlier d-maxes would get a little warm from what I’ve heard. Mines a LML and I was pulling my buddies toy hauler up Baker grade with the cruise control on 70 with the outside temp at 114. Gcw was 23,000. Coolant and trans temps never even budged. I still am amazed what these things will do.

Yeah, in my 2003 the engine and transmission would get pretty hot if I let it keep pulling up a steep grade. I watched the transmission temps pretty closely on the 2017 on this last trip and it never got above 185* no matter what I did. Engine temp never budged at all. I'm impressed for sure.
