1/2 ton or 3/4ton

Would the 4l80e be the only reason to get a 91? Couldnt I get, lets say an 1989 and just put in a 4L80E? Or is there other reasons? Thanks

You could go that rout. It woud take finding the tranny, modifying the mount and drive shaft, and either adding a stand alone controller or swaping in a PCM in place of your current computer. The 1991 4L80e was the first of the computer controlled transmissions.

Are the rest of the years the same except for the TBI, and the front grill?

A 1/2 ton, depending on year will have an overdrive trans, a 700R4. The 3/4 tons with the exception of the 91 will have T400 non overdrive. You could also get a std trans Burb with the SM465 trans. The diff between the 1/2 and 3/4 tons are the axles and the transmissions. I also prefer the ride of a 3/4 ton vs a 1/2 ton. I love my 88 3/4 ton. You also need to figure if you want fuel injection or not, 87 & up were TBI, the rest were carbed, minus the 6.2 Diesel of course.

I like the idea of an overdrive, but would prefer a 3/4 ton. Are the 400s alot stronger than the 700r4. Could you put a 700r4 in a 3/4 ton for the overdrive or is that just stupid. I also do want TBI.

You could put a 700 in there. In the early 90s there were 3/4 chevys with 700's they were LD 3/4's though. You would be better off with a 4L80E.

th350 = 700r4 in basic strength.

th400 = 4l80-e almost 95% of the units are the same basicly. even share the same gear ratios. its just a 400 + o/d & + lockup convortor.

if you want tbi and overdrive strength with all factory optioned no swapin around crap get a 91. there still out there. dont be afraid to have it shipped.

Thats the main thing, just trying to find a 91 3/4 ton. Ive only seen one for like $4,000.

honestly it dosnt matter. find a sub that has a solid body, and options you want. even if you buy a 1500, the 3/4 ton axles are cheap and bolt right in. my logic is 1500's were more likely the grocery getters, and led sheltered lives. the 2500's were probably the work horses. and got abused more.

Unless you're dead set on a 4L80, I agree with this line of thinking. the beauty of our chevys is that everthing is interchangable. Find the cleanest rig you can and build from there

The 700r4 get an undeserved bad rap, so depending on what you were towing it would hold up fine. A friend raced on the USAC tour in the midwest for years and used two different half ton Subs with 700r4's to pull a 20' enclosed tandem axle trailer (I would estimate 6k lbs.) around. The first was a mid-80's with a warmed up and very strong carb'd 350 and a rebuilt 700r4 they did themselves, and he always towed in OD. The only reason that Sub was retired because the body rusted out but the trans was going strong after many years and thousands of miles of towing. The replacement was a '91 with stock TBI 350 and 700r4, and again it spent many years towing the trailer until the guy retired from racing and then spent many years as a DD until the frame started to rot out.

Well I found a 1990 1/2 ton, good interior and exterior. The only thing is, and this is off topic, but it has been sitting for about a year to 2 years. Also there is no starter in it to turn it over. Before I spend the money to buy and put a starter into it, to see if it even runs, do you guys suggest I check or do anything first. It will also need a battery. Thanks for the help.
