1 month to 8.1 swap, then another month to Nv4500 swap

87 V20 Burb- 6.2 Diesel to 8.1-Th400 to Nv4500 I got around a month to complete, then a 800 mile drive. and then a 2300 mile roundtrip
Of course then this happened on the way to work.

I’m not happy with the way the exhaust shop did my exhaust. I just needed the head pipes made and adapted to the stock system. I told them to weld some o2 sensor bungs in evenly while there.

One side hangs below the leaf spring and the o2 sensors are clocked differently and not parallel to each other. They got me in/out quickly but now I want to have it all redone all the way out.

I keep having this code come up but my tuner and a few other guys told me not to worry. It idles around 740-760rpms. I was worried that maybe my intake manifold was leaking because I did intake gaskets. But a few shots of brake clean around essential areas cane up with no idle change or stumble.

Possible lifter noise. I don’t know how to post a video to share. Was there ever a problem with the 01-02 8.1’s?

I tried 10/30 synthetic blend Kendall oil, then went to 15/40 Kendall. Same sound.

I’m also wondering if the tick I hear when driving is the lifter or just a exhaust leak at the header. I have been looking at gasket options. Sanderson recommends just high temp/copper rtv. I know a few guys with Sandersons and they are always taking them off to re-seal them. These are a pita to get off and I don’t want to listen to a leak. l found that remflex makes a 8.1 specific gasket so I ordered up a couple options. Next could be a copper & rtv combo.

any experience out there with similar combos?

Lifters weren't a wide spread issue back in the day. Could be from storage and one or two are taking longer to pump up.

I'd say you are on the right track looking at exhaust leaks though. Get the headers sealed up and reevaluate.

I used the Remflex on mine with no sealant, so far no leaks be sure to follow the torque specs because they do compress quit a bit.

I'm not too convinced that they are going to pump up. I've been driving it for a week and after 2 oil changes, the sound is still there occasionally.
I did a external oil cooler on this 8.1 with 1/2" fittings and lines, is it possible that they are too small? Maybe the oil bypass thing is giving me a issue?

The exhaust leak is a different sound.

Hard to say without hearing it. Does it sound like 1 or 2 lifters not pumping up or more?

What's Tilden got to say about it?

I talked to them about the sound. He had me disconnect the torque converter to confirm the sound, which I did. Sound is still there. He also said he runs straight 40w in them. That seems a bit thick to me. I started with 10-30 and then went to 15/40.

He said if I narrow it down we can talk about it.

You can tell if you have an exhaust leak by looking at your long term fuel trims with your scanner, they will be high and the engine will be running rich.

What type of bolts-or lock bolts do you have on your headers?
Stage 8
Do you know what version of the BBC gasket you are using, and are those stage 8 locking bolts?
I have Doug Thorley headers and the ports are smaller then yours, I would use the ones that match your headers. Yes Stage 8 bolts. Just went thru my receipts , I used the 2002 's for gaskets

The 8.1 started chirping in the am so I tracked it down to the idler. I figured I’d just change out the original tensioner while I was in there too. No more chirp.

I had a buddy that was interested in my latest score so I hauled the other burb into town to try and sell it.

No dice. But once again, the 8.1 handled it easy.

I posted the recent purchase up on the Facebook and it was sold within minutes. So now I have the funds to make a few shifty decisions.

After many different plans and going back and forth about rebuilding my existing th400 or my mystery condition 4l80, I was wanting more than either could offer. The original plan was to rebuild the 400 for now and start saving up for a 4l80 swap. $1100 to build the 400. $1800 to rebuild the 80, $1100 for the special low gear first option, cost of the harness rebuild, cost of the ecu flash, possible driveshaft and t-case change too. That was just too much to justify. Then, there was a conversation about changing the 60/14bff gear ratio’s from 3.73 to 4.10. Even more money.

My buddy then threw this out there. “Why not put a NV4500 in it?” I was like, well the transmission is $800-$1200 for a used unit. Then I got to find the right pedal assembly, hydraulics, clutch, clutch safety start switch, driveshafts and t case. He then chimes in that he has a 93 model NV4500, it has the deep first gear and the non-hydraulic release slave setup. He would trade me my 4l80 core and rebuild the nv for a killer price. I then start whining about how hard it is to find the right hydraulic clutch pedal assembly for a hydroboost setup and how much they cost. He then tells me that he has a buddy with a 86 that’s parting out his truck. A quick phone call and they are mine.

What a great day! It will be a wk till I get the pedals and a month till the NV4500 will be ready, but I am pumped. The sale of the Burb and a few other parts should cover the swap costs.

I started amassing the other parts for the swap. Flywheel bolts have to come from the dealer and I got some Redline specific gear oil for the 5spd coming tomorrow.

I just need to figure out the hole and boot cover for the floor
