1 ton at last!

Koldsimer says he notices his detroit in the front with slugs. I am trying to see if he notices it in 2wd or only in 4wd.

I have a welded front and realize how it would be noticable in 4wd with the hubs locked. I however cannot leave the hubs locked even in 2wd well I could not before I put the hydro assist on:D. I plan on swapping to a detroit and slugs and I need to know if it acts the same in 2wd and 4wd or is 2wd just like any other vehicle in 2wd other than the front shaft turns.

Maybe I am not asking the question properly.:o

I hear ya man. I only drove my truck maybe 50 street miles with the slugs. The entire time I was in 2wd. The majority of the problems were due to my horrible pinion angle (8" of lift and axle 1 1/2 forward), the long slip splines that have no coating and that superflex joint that vibrates like hell. During the 50 street miles, i noticed at least a couple times what felt like a detroit loading and unloading in the front end. It definately wasn't as pronounced as the detroit out back- that damn thing clunks so bad sometimes that it feels like I just lost my entire axle. When I felt it up front, it just made a clank and I could feel it through the wheel more than anything. I think it never loaded/unloaded real harsh because, as you said, there is no torque input at the pinion. It pissed me off at first because I had heard that it was cool to run a detroit flange combo up front on the street. I probably could have lived with the combination if it weren't for all my other issues that were contributing to the problem.

Thanks that is what I was looking for. With my setup if I try to turn on pavement with the hubs locked and in 2wd all 4 of my tires make hella noise and chirp the whole way since the front is welded and a detroit in the rear all 4 tires try to take the same arch and it aint happnin:D. I like the idea of slugs due to the no moving parts to break like in a hub.

If working properly a Detroit (or Lock-right) should be no more noticable in the front axle with flanges or locked hubs while in 2wd than an open diff.

It sounds like koldsimer's problem has nothing to do with the Detroit, and he would experience the same "problems" with an open diff since it's all coming from his front driveshaft. Several people in my club, including myself, have run Detroits or Lock-rights in the front with flanges and you can not notice anything while in 2wd.

Yes, you would notice a welded or spooled front with flanges simply because it does not have the ability to unlock like a Detroit does.

i swear my detroit in my 60 is always looked, at least it seems that way, we are talking about a ful detroit right? i would run flanges but i always read that with a street driven rig with a locker up front it would cause issues, so i went with lockouts
