I'm thinking I want/need to upgrade my axles so I can run paddles in the dunes. I know for a rock crawler the 14ff which is the 10.5 dia is king but is it too heavy for go fast and fly? I think I heard the un-sprung weight is not desirable for this style of off-roading. Should I be looking more towards the 9.5 in dia 14 bolt as a more viable option? Along with this is the front 12 bolt going too big/heavy as well? What do you guys think?

The front 12 bolt?

Should be a Dana 44 in your rig my friend. There was never a front 12 bolt.

Yes there is a 44 in it right now. Was looking to up-grade. I have a 12 bolt rear right now and don't think it will hold up to paddles and HP. I have a 87 Burb with a 9.5 14 bolt and a 10 bolt front and thought that was the best choice for a swap but found a good deal on the larger 14 bolt and a 12 bolt front and was just wondering if that was too much over kill for what I'm using the truck for.

What size of paddles? What HP you going to run. Our dunes I have only seen a couple guys running paddles on all four and they were all upwards of the 800 horse range. But our dunes are steeper than alot of dunes around.

Depending on power I would say fabricated 9" would be best front and rear. Not cheap though.

44 can be built to handle quite a bit if trussed properly can take quite a punishment.

I have seen guys with 14 bolts and 60s out at the dunes flying around though, including myself. With my new bumpstops I should be flying alot longer than with the old hard rubber bumpstops

There is no 12 bolt front ever made, I have never even seen a custom one. Probably because a 12 bolt is no stronger than a 10 bolt, so if the guy is selling you a 12 bolt front its probably a 10 bolt

X's 3 on the 12 bolt front.

There was never one made. Not in factory form though. Maybe you're thinking of a custom made one?:dunno:

Ok, so I'm not going to pursue these and stick with my original plan and just use my suburbans Smaller 14 and it's 10 bolt front.
HP is a bit more than 500. Paddle size don't know as of yet(I'll need to do more research before I make a purchase)

i think the 14b and dana 60 would be fine. most flyers usually runa ford 9", but with the kinda power your gonna put down especially with traction of paddles, i'd just run the standard setup. it'll be strong enough to handle it and any weight problem could be offset with good weight distribution and suspension.

One of my buddies down in Arizona built a suburban prerunner and used a 14 bolt sf and a fully trussed 10 bolt in the front. He needs a pilots license to drive that thing and it has been holding up just fine for over a year.

I have been flying a 10 bolt and 9" Currie extreme duty. Bent the 10 bolt after 6 years. Have a trussed 10 bolt now. Flying and paddle need to be looked at separately then combine the best of both.

Flying needs trussing and quality axles(rear). Less unsprung weight the better.

Horse power and paddles need big housing, gears and axles.

Just my 2 cents.

I asked him about the front.

Honestly, you can find 3/4 tons for cheaper than $800. A lot cheaper.

i ran 35in extreme paddles on my blazer at glamis. had no issues with the 12bolt rear in sand. my hp was calculated at around 390hp and 470ftlbs of tq.

I'd run it as is and if you start breaking go from there. I think you might be surprised at how well they hold up to paddles... sand is really forgiving.

I would to see some pics or vids of this said burb! Or, maybe specs, build or anything.

O---I'm sorry guys, most of the build is in the 1st gen section. I forget not everybody gets in that area. There is a short video in this section I started a go fast smooth ride side video thread.
*(Sorry again after reading the last post i realized it was not my truck that you asked to see)*
