As long as you're starting with 8 lug axles, go for it. Buying wheels and tires based around 6 lug stuff sucks when it's time to get stronger since stronger usually comes with 8 lugs.
I've seen the stuff Juan has done to his K5 with a 9.5" and while I don't think it's a great idea for everything, they are pretty tough. If you match it with a 10 bolt front you're probably not going to break the rear since it's a bunch stronger than the front.
We've spent some time going fast with a trussed up kingpin D60 and a 14FF. They work pretty good. Lighter would be better but not breaking is first and best.
