while working on my wheel bearings today I noticed that
the axle shaft moved inside the axel tube like up,down, front & back. Is that normal? or is it a sign of a bad bearing? If it makes a difference I had my hubs off. Any help would be
great I am clueless on this.

Thats normal. They are supposed to move a little bit to compensate for the steering. If they were stiff and non-movable, something would break inside, either the u-joints, axle shafts, kuckles, etc. So, a little play makes it work smoother. Nothing to worry about here.
