I broke a axle shaft in my 10 bolt, well the problem is that the axle shaft i am putting back in dosent have a place for the snap ring on the end of the stub shaft. The stub shaft that was in it has 2 different places for the snap ring and this one only has one. What will happen if i don't have the snap ring on the stub shaft? The reason I ask is that I already have it together.

I don't know if this matters or not but i think the axle shaft is out of a 79 10bolt that had a full time 203 in it.

You need to have the snap ring in their to keep the inner shaft from riding too far into the inner C. You should be able to use a screw driver on the u-joint to force it out far enough to fit a snap ring on it.

ive tried prying on the shaft and it won't come out far enough

ill get some pics

the top one is the one that come out of my truck and the bottom one is the match to the one that is in there now

The 10 bolt axle that I got from you is the same way on one side. It's been fine for nearly 15K now.

You are lucky so far.
The shaft can move this way and can really damage things.
Ask me how I know.
By the way, I doubt the 10 bolts came on trucks that had the 203, I could be wrong but I think the one you have is from a D44.

How do you know?:D

It was always my understanding that the 10bolt front was phased in during the '77 model year. I now believe this to be true because I have two '77s, one with a 10bolt and the other with a d44. Both have the 203.

well as you know the shaft with no c clip could move inwards, and in mine it did and moved the ujoint from the center of the knucke and I guess it was binding because it just blew, before it did I was starting to feel a wobble in the steering wheel when I had my wheels turned.
When it did blow it also sent the shaft back out toward the locking hub and destroyed inside.
If you can not fit the clip on the outside, on some models it has a grove flush with the spindle, as long as there is a clip to hold the shaft in place.

Did you run with your hubs always locked? I usually don't, but they were locked most of this last winter. Haven't experienced any shake or wobble of any kind... yet.

The axle shafts in my front 10b look like the one on top in the picture (with two snap ring grooves)...

With my stock spicer hubs I used the groove closest to the u-joint (the one on the right in that picture) but I recently put on some Warn hubs and ended up using the outer snap ring groove....

What kind of hubs do you have?

i know for a fact it had a 10 bolt in the front, if it was a D44 i wouldn't have haled it off with the truck for junk
