Tailgate Hinges

Howdy!
I'm attempting to disassemble the tailgate hinges and replace the bushings. For whatever the reason, the pins just refuse to come out. I can't find a c-clip or anything else that would appear to block it from coming out. Anyone know the secret handshake?

I am pretty sure they are a press fit one the outer

And stamped once assembled to get that retaining bulge on the pin so no hardware is needed.
I don’t think there are bushings in those hinges - just lube with penetrating liquid occasionally.

Interesting. I assumed they were serviceable since we can buy pins and bushings from LMC

The pictures make it look like there's something in there. I've never tried to take one apart.

Maybe the LMC site is just screwed up listing front door hinge pins on the tailgate page? I mean, as pictured (#26), would mean the inner hinge ID is much smaller than on the outer hinge and I don't think anybody has evidence for that.

That also leads to the next question. Why do you want to replace those parts? What's the problem? Usually the back of the truck rusts off and the hinges are no longer attached before those hinge pins become a problem.

Fair points. I was taking them apart because one side has a fair bit of slop, and it wasn’t latching quite right. I can adjust the strikers, but thought I’d check the whole thing out.

I’ve never seen nor ever heard of those tailgate hinges being serviceable - and the bulge at the lead end of the pins would indicate that the only way to remove is to grind it off.
Then once the replacement pins are installed there needs to be a physical method to retain these pins.

It’s crazy that they list those bushings - maybe there was a year span that they were serviceable and LMC is known for being very general about parts and groups covering many years of models for blanket coverage.

Keep us posted on what ya’ find if you tear into them.

I decided to just clean them up a skosh and shoot them with some black. Back on the truck they go!

Well there you go. I’ll have to see if I can replicate this.

Wow - I guess your pins weren’t “stamped” at the ends ( appeared so in the pic ).
I assume that it’s retained by just good ole fashioned interference or press fit.
