10 bolt to 14 bolt sf - lug nut stud problem!

ARP - is that like a grade 8 bolt or something? thinking I could tack weld the grade 8 bolt heads to the back of the axle shaft and use the original lug nuts????

Yup you can do that, you can drive drunk too, you can do lots of stuff doesn't mean its smart or going to work right and not kill somebody

just buy new lug nuts or run two different types

well the ford lugs looks like it'll do it. gotta trim the holes for the lug nuts on the rims still, but not as much as the 14mm

thanks for the help guys

Did they change the wheels from 88 to 90? I don't understand why my wheels work just fine, and it is a problem with yours.

just reaad in the 14bsf tech thread about the ford 1/2-20 stud. gonna check those out.

I believe someone also found 1/2-20 studs that fit the front 10-bolt if you are particular about keeping the lug nuts the same size front to rear. I run the 1/2-20 in the rear of my 9.5 SF and they work fine. Buy the zinc plated ones if you live in the rust belt. I learned that the hard way.

The ARP studs are probably stronger than grade 8 and come with that yellow-gold zinc-cadmium coating that has yet to start rusting even after a salty winter. I wish I could find the part numbers and you can have 1/2"-20 at all 4 corners. The only thing is that you have to run open lug nuts given the struds are 3" long. Also a dab of antisieze and changing a tire is a breeze.

I don't know why this is a surprise. I've never heard anybody on this site say that 14b s/f axles have 1/2-ton studs in them or that they will match a front 10-bolt.

I have always just lived with different front and rear lug nuts. Not a big deal to me. The rear is actually 9/16 and they fit my rims just fine. My long term solution is to upgrade the front to 9/16 (I have this figured out, but it requires drilling).

Are you REALLY sure that the 14mm studs don't fit in your rims?

so I went ahead and put the Ford 4x4 lugs on from a '94 and that worked. I had to take the center caps off, and use a thin walled socket to tighten it. i also used the open acorn lugs Chevy305 was saying.

all is good now and on my 2nd day of driving it to work. the 3/4 ton rear brakes make it about 25% better braking now also :)

thanks guys!
