i have a 10 bolt....i found a cheap 12 bolt rear my sweet heart (my k5) ....is it an easy swap? no fab. work needed? should be same gears ratios if they are both stockers..right? pinion yoke same size??..etc.??? thnx
how do i search forums to find if anyone else already asked this question?

No guarantees on the gears being the same ratio. GM put out a lot of ratios. The 10 bolt is about the same as the 12 bolt, why would you spend the time to switch a very comparable axle? I think the yokes are different as well. I know there is a recent thread you should be able to find with the search.

Why are you replacing the 10 bolt? Unless it just needs replacing, swapping out the 10 for the 12 won't get you a stronger axle. It would be less trouble to find another 10 bolt. Unless the current 10 bolt is trashed and you already have the 12 bolt with the right gears lying around.

really?? not gonna gain me any strength?? hmmmm?? cool thnx dudes...ya saved me $100 bucks

A better axle to get would be the semi-float 14 bolt found on some of the '88 and up half tons. It's still a six lug axle (so you could use your same wheels), but it's supposed to be a lot stronger than the 10 bolt. It has about a 9 1/2 or 9 3/4 inch ring gear (I think) as opposed to the 10 bolt's 8.75" (once again I can't remember the exact diameter.) Lots of guys on this forum have done that swap. Use the search.

This ^^^^ is a much better idea.
or an early dana 60 from a ford is a 5 lug option and its spring pads are the right width if I remember correctly late 60's early 70's I think had them
Local pick and pull yards have them

The old 60 rear really is a POS...moreso than a 10 or 12 bolt. The only thing it has over either the 10 or 12 is ring gear size.

16 spline shafts that aren't any bigger than the 10 bolt or 12 bolts...
