10bolts and tires larger then 35's

Previous owner of my truck ran 36s with 3.73 posi 10 bolts, blew the rear not sure what actually broke though. I had a 10 bolt G80 3.08 rear in my 99Z56 2wd Tahoe, ran stock 30" wheels and cracked a few teeth of the pinion doing burn outs...

i ran 35s on my 1/2 ton with 3.73 gears and my onlt problem was blowing hubs now and then other then that it worked great...and i could still do smoke shows with them, i mostly did mud and trail and very minor rock crawling...but like said above...dont floor it over rocks and stuff cuz they will snap.
 
I did run 42 inch Iroks on a front ten bolt for multiple wheeling trips... I went through 7 or 8 axle shafts with mine. I had an eaton in the rear though and the front had a lockrite... It can be done and It will teach you to get off the go pedal when the truck starts to bounce... Now I run a chromo'd 60 and can give it some go pedal again... however remember I was running some pretty hard trails on that ten bolt...

Looks like its goin to be a mandatory 14bff upgrade in the rear if i want bigger then 35's on my blazer, time to really start looking!



btw local yards want $250 for a 14bff is it worth it ? or should i keep looking for cheaper
 
You can generally get by with more tire on a 10-bolt front versus a 10-bolt rear. I broke two front axle shaft u-joints with a 10-bolt front, limited slip, and 35's, but that was mainly due to driving style. After figuring out you shouldn't have the wheels at full lock when down in a rut or something, and in general being careful, it held up fine. I also had a 14-bolt FF in the back which you know isn't going to break with 35's.

Also with the front axle, if you do break something it's rarely something that disables the vehicle or makes it tough to drive off the trail or down the road. Generally you can just unlock the hubs and put it in 2wd and it's like nothing is wrong. If you break a rear axle you have to deal with a tire no longer attached to the truck (broken shaft) or cobbling it together to limp back home.
 
I'm thinking my next rig will be a lightweight K5 with 3/4 ton's and 36" IROK's on H2's. I really miss driving on the street. :(
 
I run 36"s on mine with a front and rear 10bolt. Romping on it up and down dry dirt hills split my rear pig pin in half and split the whole carrier itself in two. It was open, no govlock. I swapped in a truetrac and have no complaints. They transfer power very smoothly side to side and helps eliminate the clunky engagement thats so hard on everything.
