I have been beating the hell out of this center pin for hours, and it will only move about a 1/4". For those out there yes I did remove the retaining bolt. The history is I went for a diff fluid change and when i removed the cover a whole pinion tooth fell out. Really threw a monkey wrench in my machine and now I cant even get out something that should just pull out. I have been thinking of putting a 2 jaw puller and pushing the pin through. I am now thinking of putting some sort of locker or limited slip carrier in if for some reason i cant remove this one without damaging it.

It is prolly galled. It will be toast. Only way is to beat the hell out of it. You may try the puller deal.

I once had the pin retainer break off in the carrier. At the time I did not have a lot of nice tools. I rolled the carrier around so that the retainer was away from me. I took a 3-4 lb hammer & beat the center pin out. It busted the carrier where I drove it through.

Try getting it back in , and rotating the carrier , and driving it out the other side . Sometimes it goes better the other way .

If the end of the pin was still in there , I don't think it would move a 1/4 inch . Now if there was a sliver in there , it may be jammed between the pin and the pin bore .

I've seen those things beat out quite aways with the retaining pin end retained in there, but I've also seen the pinion shaft messed up as well, just curious how far he got.

I've cracked the carrier trying to beat the pinion shaft out, so be careful.

I'm going to bet 100% that the pin is broken and there is still a broken piece inside the carrier and cross shaft. Take a pic of the pin you removed and post it here for us to see.

I just realized that you cannot post a pic here yet since you don't have a high enough post count. E-mail me a pic and i'll post it up for you. My e-mail is in my profile but here it is as well, [email protected]

Im working with thor1982 on this and yes the pin is fully removed we had the center pin out far enough for us to se through the two holes that the retainer goes through.

You are probably dealing with a galled pinion shaft then, as mentioned above, and likely probably shot pinion gears as well.

Tried pushing it out both directions?

cut it out with a oxy/act tourch and drive the stubs up threw the carrier to the center. you will be needing a new pin and spider gears anyways. so just do it. the coating of gear oil all over will protect the parts from hot slag. just be sure to rinse the hell out of the diff and install a magnet on the cover to colect anything left over.

or get a new pin and a lockright/powertrax unit for the open diff.

I had that same problem the other day i got out my die grinder out and cut the pin untill it fell out.then cleaned the hell out of it.what happend was my spider gears were welded to the cross pin.

now we got about an inch and a half of the pin out. and now i am thinking that we just need to get a cutoff wheel and cut what is sticking out and pound the rest of it out with the hammer. Also i heard that it is a PITA to take out the spider gears and replace them? Can anyone give us some advice on how to do this without headaches.

we got it out, we cut the exposed end with a sawzall and then pounded the rest of the way with a hammer. Those spider gears were trashed really bad, the inside looked like they were threaded. We got a new set of spiders on order, we would have went with a locker but money is a little tight.

on a 1 peice carrier like this once center pin is out the spiders fall out like butter on a hot plate. not rocket science.
