Is there such thing as a 12 bolt FF axle? My dad has a 70's GM truck with a 12 bolt FF axle. At least I think its a FF axle. Its 8 lug exactly like 14 bolt and the axles bolt to the hub. I had to do a double take and confirm it was a 12 bolt. He bought this truck brand new so nothing has ever been swapped.

Well, compare the diff pumpkins to the various ones here:

If it's 8-lug, it's not the GM Corporate 12-bolt referred to here.

I suspect you'll find it's a 14BFF; if it's early 70's (pre-'73) you may find it to be an Eaton or D60.

No such thing.

Warn did use to make a Full Float kit for a 10 and 12 bolt axle but i don't know if that kept them 6 lug or if there was an 8 lug option. Get some pics of this axle so we can tell you what it is for certain.

The Warn full floater conversions kept the axles 6 lug.

i totally forgot about this mod.i was thinkin about doing this and gave up on it when i blew my second 12 bolt and was workin on the third and said screw it and went 3/4 ton.

I almost bought one back when I had my '92 Blazer K1500.

Ah, the days of being that young and dumb and not thinking twice about spending $1500 on a pretty stupid mod.

Now that I have no money I'm smart enough not to spend it on stupid stuff.

Will get pics as soon as I get a chance. It's an 8 lug axle the truck is a 70's gmc

Thought they only used Dana 60 SF's and Eaton FF's under these trucks?

At any rate, yep, looks like a Dana 60 FF. Unless GM did use them I'm betting someone swapped one in out of a Dodge or Ford.

Got any pics of the whole truck? Love the oldies.

This truck is 100% stock. All parts came directly from the dealer. Front axle is similiar. It's a one owner truck.

I have seen a few of the early 70's 3/4 trucks with a FF D60 rear end. Only thing I can figure was it was one of those stages where GM used what was on hand. Sorta like the close out off the D44 fronts and the beginning of the 10 bolt fronts. My guess is they came up short on Eaton rear ends in like 71-72 and figured they would get a few 60's from Spicer before they came out with the 14 bolt in 73'.
