Wouldn't put it past GM.
this is more than likely what happened.quick question though, what was stronger.eaton or 60 rear?im guessing eaton because of the drop in third member but never really seen a comparison.i think the eaton also has the same size shafts as a 14 bolt.I have seen a few of the early 70's 3/4 trucks with a FF D60 rear end. Only thing I can figure was it was one of those stages where GM used what was on hand. Sorta like the close out off the D44 fronts and the beginning of the 10 bolt fronts. My guess is they came up short on Eaton rear ends in like 71-72 and figured they would get a few 60's from Spicer before they came out with the 14 bolt in 73'.
It will be a closed knuckle Dana 44 with drum brakes. Only axle offered in 71 in both 1/2 and 3/4 trucks. Disc brakes came the following year. Dana 60 front's did not arrive until 77 when GM first offered the Chevy K30 and GMC K35 models, it was also the first year of the 1 ton 4x4 for GM.Next time I'm at my dad's I'll snap some photos of the front axle I have no idea whats under there.

seems nothing breaks when you have money, either. but once your pennyless, ten foot of your driveway becomes a tank trap. Now that I have no money I'm smart enough not to spend it on stupid stuff.
Someone has messed with the truck then. Common swap back in the day though. Can be done with all OEM parts.Front axle is disc brakes that much I do know.
