12 bolt FF axle?

I have seen a few of the early 70's 3/4 trucks with a FF D60 rear end. Only thing I can figure was it was one of those stages where GM used what was on hand. Sorta like the close out off the D44 fronts and the beginning of the 10 bolt fronts. My guess is they came up short on Eaton rear ends in like 71-72 and figured they would get a few 60's from Spicer before they came out with the 14 bolt in 73'.
this is more than likely what happened.quick question though, what was stronger.eaton or 60 rear?im guessing eaton because of the drop in third member but never really seen a comparison.i think the eaton also has the same size shafts as a 14 bolt.

Eaton by far. It's like a Flintstone tech 14FF.

The D60FF's that the OEM's used are more like a full floating 14SF. Better than a 10 bolt or 12 bolt but not up to the standards of a 14FF by far. Might even have the little 19 spline axleshafts.

Next time I'm at my dad's I'll snap some photos of the front axle I have no idea whats under there.

My all original 70' Chevy Custom Camper Special had a Dana 60 with 4.56 gears in it. Also had a tow package with a beefed up turbo 400 trans. Your dads is a Dana 60 aswell.

It will be a closed knuckle Dana 44 with drum brakes. Only axle offered in 71 in both 1/2 and 3/4 trucks. Disc brakes came the following year. Dana 60 front's did not arrive until 77 when GM first offered the Chevy K30 and GMC K35 models, it was also the first year of the 1 ton 4x4 for GM.

My Bower/BCA bearing catalog lists a Spicer rear axle used in some 69-72 GM trucks, under the GMC listings,so yeah,I'd guess they did use some Spicer axles factory during that time period..they list different bearings than the typical GM rear axles or Eatons used, for Spicers..

Front axle is disc brakes that much I do know.

Someone has messed with the truck then. Common swap back in the day though. Can be done with all OEM parts.
seems nothing breaks when you have money, either. but once your pennyless, ten foot of your driveway becomes a tank trap.
...or your house eats your truck.:wink1:

All parts are original. This truck was bought new by my dad nothing has ever been changed. He purchased it when he worked for the forestry service way back when. The truck also has under 100k original miles. I should be able to get over there this weekend to snap some more photos. The only thing thats ever been changed on this truck is the color.

must have been a late year 71 to have the 72 knuckles and disk brakes.might have been an option at that time and not standard yet.would still be a dana 44 front as that was all they used in chevys until late 77.

GMC used the Dana 60 and even 44 rears prior to 73 when the new body style came out. I looked at a 65 3/4 GMC that had a Dana 60 rear in it.

I never saw a Dana 44 rear in a GM truck before, was kinda weird.

Front axle has 10 bolts. Tried to get my dad to snap a pic with his phone but he technologically challenged.

Could have possibly been an option? I know he had saddle tanks installed also since it was to be used out in the forest. I might get over there this weekend to get some pics.
