Can some one tell me how hard it is to find a 12 bolt front end for my 85 K-5 and about what it should be$$$$. And will it be worth the time to swap my 10 bolt for the twelve bolt both front and rear. Some one said that finding a 12 bolt w/373 in it would be really hard to do because there are not that many 12 bolt fronts around.
Thanks
Rick

The only 12 bolt fronts you will ever find are not factory. They are a custom made axle.

Definately isn't alot of front 12 bolts around. Infact I have never heard of it. Good luck.

I got this interesting tidbit directly from Grim-Reaper.

In reply to:

Last guy that I ran across on the POR board that thought he had a 12 bolt had a 10bolt with GM12 cast into the side. Somebody else woke up and figured out where the guy was getting "12" from. I had completly forgotten that was cast into many of them. It's on Jan's 79. I haven't looked to see if it's on this 10 I just swapped into my 75.

Kinda explains the confusion. The 12 bolt front unless custom made does not exist.

GM12 is cast into the carrier on the 10-bolt front end out in the garage.

Only see GM 5 and the casting numbers on the housing though.

It's a unicorn. You come up with one I'll give you 50 bucks. It has to be a GM axle and it has to have the 8 7/8 ring gear just like a 12 rear.

The 12 bolt front doesn't exist, plus the 12 bolts are only slightly stronger than your 10 bolt. There are really only 2 other options for front axles. One is the Dana 44, which isn't much stronger than what you have now and probably isn't worth swapping unless yours is broken. The other option is the Dana 60, this one is very strong and is worth it if you can afford it, usually start at about $1000 used. There are other axles that can be used, but they're not as common.

i read somewhere that the truck 12-bolts are .125(1/8) inchs smaller than the car 12-bolts. just curious if you know if that is true

If sancho knows what good for him, he best go run and hide. Cause daddy's got a new 45.
